It's always very sad when someone with that level of passion and knowledge passes away. I didn't know Paul but reading the update he seems like the sort of chap we like in railway preservation. Very sad. But his efforts clearly haven't been in vain and the 3MT locomotive will be something to remember him, and others like him, by.

It is, indeed, a sad reminder of mortality and of the fact that none of us know when it will be "time". All the more reason for concentrating on sensible projects like this one and getting them finished before veering off onto something else.

I am sorry if this is too blunt for some in the present sad circumstances but it is something far too often ignored.

Did this actually go any further? As a result of the Didcot 'new builds' our project has been ring fenced as a new build so would be interested in any advice you guys might have.

Very sad to hear of Paul Anderson's death. I knew him through the Mersey & Calder Bus Preservation Group, his sense of humour was something else! Obscure in-jokes were the norm, had some really good laughs with him. We used to know him as "The Talk Converter", as he always had funny names and expressions for everything...
I hadn't seen him for the past few years, but only recently was wondering if he still lived near me in Halifax.

    Richard.

Richard, Paul`s funeral is on 31st January. 3pm at Stoney Royd cemetery, Halifax. I believe he will be arriving on a vintage bus rather than a hearse. That`s the sense of humour!!

Thank You for letting me know! I wish I could make it, unfortunately work precludes that - He will be taking his last journey on one of Tony Blackman's preserved vehicles - Probably Halifax 277, a very smart 1950 AEC Regent III. He'd love that!

If anyone would like a copy of Paul Anderson's superb article "Top and Half Left", published in SVR News a couple of years ago, please email me on chris.proudfoot045@btinternet. com and I will send it to you as an attachment. He was one of my best mates and will be so missed. He was so much looking forward to firing 82045 as well. What a bloody shame.

Paul H, please be assured I will not be veering off into anything else until the job's done, and even then I shall be looking after the loco's funding so that it doesn't end up sidelined in the Engine House for decades. Twenty-three years on the Stanier Mogul Fund's Committee and fourteen with 82045 should reassure anyone that I'm not frivolous.

    The 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY: "WATERLOO SUNSET"

On Friday 6th October, The 82045 Steam Locomotive Trust is running a special train in memory of Paul Anderson, who died on January 17th. As many of you will know, Paul was a fireman at Nine Elms in the 1960's, working out of Waterloo on everything from the big "Merchant Navy" Pacifics to the many 82XXX tanks that finished their days in and around the former LSWR terminus. One of the things he was most looking forward to was to fire 82045 when it enters service on the SVR, a solemn promise I'd made to him some years ago.

Paul was laid to rest at the end of January on a murky, drizzly afternoon at Halifax's Stoney Royd Cemetery. A native of South London, he had asked for Ray Davies's unforgettable 1967 hit "Waterloo Sunset" to be played at the simple ceremony, and so this is the name we have chosen for the train. The SR-style headboard will read WATERLOO SUNSET with, underneath, Paul Lawrence Anderson 1945-2017.

The special will consist of one round trip Bridgnorth-Kidderminster hauled by 34027 `Taw Valley`. There will be a three-hour stopover at Kidderminster, during which we hope to surprise you with some nice jollies.

Paul was one of our dearest friends and an exuberant character, and would be delighted that proceeds from the event are to kick-start the 82045 Future Account, a money pot which we are establishing in order to ensure that funds will always be available to look after the new loco's future wellbeing after it has entered service.

Ticket price has been fixed at £30, and you can reserve yours by sending a stamped addressed envelope, with your cheque, to Mrs.Barbara Massau, 4 Southfield, Prestbury, Cheshire SK10 4XF.

The apparent angle of the reamer is a trick on the eye. If you cover the cylinder body with your hand, and concentrate on the cylinder flange, you will see that all is not as appears.

I am sure you must be right, possibly the way the light catches the flutes.

Light possibly has an effect, together with the number of conflicting shapes on the outside of the cylinder. I can assure you that like everything else on 82045, the reamed hole is perfectly aligned. Brilliant engineers and all work overseen and checked by the beady eyes of our very own Mr Riddles !

Presumably it is a boiler reamer and will thus have a tapered end. As you can only see the top flutes due to the swarf, I am sure that is why it looks to be at an angle.
