In the U.S. they are termed "composite trucks"(IIRC) i.e. a timber frame with a steel facing. As early Pullman cars a fair number of Trans Atlantic features are likely to be present in these vehicles. FWIW the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec are currently building new composite trucks for their 3' gauge Pullman style sleeper.

Has there been any more news on the Seaburn Pullmans? It would be a real shame to lose them...

Reading in Heritage Railway magazine they are up for sale and the council will not just selling to the highest bidder. If I can remember there were 3 questions, the questions are phrased in a way that only heritage railways can answer. 1. Does the carriage have any history of working on that railway or nearby? 2.How will the carriage benefit your Railway? 3. How will you remove the carriage and restore it?
The only problem with the questions is the first one as it favours Southern Railway heritage lines as the coaches are SECR origin, but I hope a railway gets them especially with the unique 12 wheel Pullman coaches.

I believe that they have been sold. No doubt 61624 will have more details (if he is willing to reveal them.)

Reported in local paper that the successful bidder is based in Kent.

As far as we can tell, yes, though the bid I am involved with has not been formally rejected yet. The winners are said to have made a "substantial cash offer" so it appears that in the end the council preferred the cash to preservation!

Have to wonder if the cash is available or if there will be a frantic fundraising effort ...

Thanks for the info all. Let's hope the successful bidders reveal more about their plans soon.

My understanding is that the cars are to be used for a new restaurant in the Folkestone Harbour area, but it isn't necessarily anything to do with the proposed railway. One source says that the purchaser is a dealer in traction engines and other steam items, based in this area but I have no confirmation of that.

oh my god:eek::eek: please not another half baked idea, the best i think you can hope for is that these cars eventually end up either on the Bluebell or KESR, They wont last 5 mins in the salt laden atmosphere of the harbour, assuming the locals dont rob any fittings then burn them out,

They are already in a bad way. Thanks to 20 years on the sea front at Sunderland. The bodies are half missing and the rest is rotten. So they really are basket cases.

Some people don't think so. And they aren't based in Folkestone.

Unsure on what is salvageable regarding underframes. But the right hand side was cut away to attach them to the pub. So most of one side is missing. It's been a few years since I visited.

It's about a third of one side, actually. The LNERCA's joiner is currently in the process of replacing the complete side of a Thompson CK at Pickering, it isn't that big a job. And he doesn't think they are "completely rotten"!

I stand corrected, i could remember largish sections missing. Just what I had heard from people that had viewed them, with idea of tendering. Plus I had not said "completely rotten", just like many restorations, alot of material will require replacement. I do hope they are restored.

The Aln Valley Railway are trying to get what is described as half of a mark 1 which was also for sale, so we can use it for parts. So far the council don't seem to be interested as they'd rather just demolish it with the old pub.

Other than a few door handles, latches and commode handles, there is nothing much there to recover. There is no interior, only windows on one side, which are the early type.
Probably the most valuable bit is the PC valve on the end.

We were hoping to get hold of the remaining bogie in particular, but doors, door locks, door window mechanisms, window frames or even the glass would be useful to us and better than going for scrap
