Wasn't very pleasant for the young lad who went into the vestibule and found what was left of him either. I'm sure if @Johnb wants to he can always refuse to leave the train, hold it up, upset those on board due to the delay and then those nice BTP chaps can be called out to eject him from the train...

I remember that one now but to put it in context that's the only one in my lifetime and almost certainly a minimum of 5 people were killed on the roads on the same day

My mate was train manager that day.
I was asked if could steward but had to refuse because of other commitments, fortunately.

That may be so, but the railway industry for better or for worse has quite clearly stated that:-

    (i) hanging anything outside of open windows (body parts or recording equipment) or (ii) Not obeying the reasonable requests from railway staff
is breaking railway by-laws and you can be prevented from travelling or removed from railway premiss if you undertake any of these actions - ticket or no ticket.

I regret to say this is something the country as bought upon itself with the enthusiastic adoption of resorting to law to sort out disputes (a la USA) and a general unwillingness to put up with being told that rights come with responsibilities.

That's a fair point with the Road stat, but heaven forbid what the response be in this day and age if that incident were to happen today?

I've had a few tales off friends of mine involving accidents and suicides. I really do feel for the poor souls who have to do the clearing up.

The bye-laws you are quoting (and not quite accurately) have been around since at least 1962. So no recent event has caused them to be amended.

but those who frequently travel on charters love reminding us in previous decades such by-laws were not usually enforced - otherwise how could they tell us "well I used to hang out the window back in 1976 and it wasn't an issue".

Possibly back then with most trains having manual doors, it was felt that anyone sticking their head out and suffering injury was nobodys fault other than their own and the railway simply saying 'don't do this' was sufficient.

This is unacceptable in todays legal environment - where even if an activity is not allowed merely having signs is not enough - physical / proactive measures must be employed to prevent it - saying "its common sense" is not a valid excuse in law. Hence the fact that the rules haven't changed since 1962 is rather irrelevant - the point is rules are being enforced today.

The regular "Heritage Service" that Northern runs is the 37 hauled Cumbrian Coast route. 10.04 from Preston and then change at Barrow in Furness for Carlisle hauled by a different 37, has bars on the doors to prevent hanging. A really good day out...

All the above is even more reason to do main line steam on the continent.

It's crazy when it's cheaper and more fun to spend a couple of days doing the Rodelblitz in Germany than it is to do a UK steam tour.

If I remember correctly the rule above the window always stated 'do not LEAN out of the window' when did it change to 'do not look out of the window' and 'do not linger in the vestibule' Was this because of a life threatening muddle in the cab of a steam loco? And if so what is the correlation between the two.

I do about a dozen steam trips a year with the wife in wine and dine. This year it will be just the one and I cannot see myself riveted to my seat all the way from Paddington to Penzance without the occasional break by an open droplight to at least hear the locomotive that I donated cash to, towards its construction. And in the aftermath of a full English breakfast or a four course dinner I would require at least ten minutes on my feet if only for the benefits of good digestion.
I am doubtful if common sense will eventually prevail, we British just love imposition but at least when out on the lineside photographing I shan't feel the slightest pang of guilt that I am no longer contributing to the Railtour industry.

I bet anyone from northern reading this thread is really looking forward to these trains now.

As stated previously I have travelled on a number of occasions on the Cumbrian Coast loco hauled stuff (as a normal) and the behaviour of 'enthusiasts' has at times been frankly embarrassing and I fear these trains will be no different.

I believe that Northern publicity blur stated that these trains were solely for locals, as a thank you for their patience during the closure of the s&c. They should have included the proviso that you had to be a regular user/commuter or live within the postcode areas between Skipton and Appleby. It's such a shame that these trips seem to have been hijacked by selfish enthusiasts, who will be able to travel by steam nearly every week once the line has re-opened. I feel sorry for the regular travellers/commuters who use these timed services to get to work, shopping etc, who may not be able to get on board. What message does that send out to the travelling public? As for the no standing rule, how ludicrous, I am guessing that the majority of Northern's commuter services are full to standing every weekday. Still we live in an ever increasing nanny state, so I suppose it's only to be expected.

I think that when you read the full facebook comments, the Northern responders are at a loss as to how to manage the concerns of the locals. A great idea could turn into a farce.

All being well it shouldn't. Though they may well be breathing a sigh of relief that 60103 isn't doing the job.
