You don't happen to know when that picture was taken, do you Ian?

Judging by the number of peak and the Shackleton 'on parade', it isn't a Royal Train about 1953 by any chance? Just I know somebody who was there and has a rather nice story about his experience, as a Corporal, of the passage of the Royal Train.

Part of his duties were ringing the Signalman from the control tower to see if an aircraft could land.

However journalists still need lessons in knowing what it is they take photos of.

fingers crossed time, i'm just hoping the ORR find in favour of the re opening i wonder if it as hoped gets the right away, will the landowners become more accomodating and settle ? or will it be for them, a fight to the death, with their land having to be subject to a CPO and they lose out on the value , what is the value of unused agricultural land where its not in use productively?

With one particular landowner it may it seems be the fight to the death unfortunately.

ORR have already stated they have no objection in principle. It is the Secretary of State for Transport who must decide a TWA application. If the landowners continue with their objections, as they have every right to do, we can expect a Public Inquiry. After a TWA is granted including CPO powers the landowners cannot delay the scheme any further by arguing about land values since the CPO process allows the railway builder to take possession of the land when required even if the final level of compensation (following an established CPO valuation formula) hasn't been fully agreed at that point.

that depends on what colour and shape :) white and mushroom i would say the farmers head just exploded i cant see him being anything but one very unhappy bunny its now going to be a case of how far do i fight it, and whate does his legal team advice him to do, once the RVR have the CPO, i would expect the advice to be to settle, don't use a firm of solicitors based in Birmingham does he Robbin:eek:

The relevant landowners would be wise to negotiate now with the RVR and come to terms.

As the process proceeds, they are likely to get less for their land asset and have less and less ability to negotiate mitigation.

The tide is now coming in more and more strongly.

I believe it was the death of one owner that removed the logjam rather than a change of heart by said party (Hence an enforced pause in the rebuilding activity at Kingscote for 10 years). However the Bluebell extension being authorised by light railway order (granted in the late 80s) did not come with CPO powers so there was not a lot the railway could do all the time both owners refused to sell.

BBC Sussex (a local BBC radio station) have been talking about this on the breakfast show this morning. They spoke to one of the Farmers around 7.15am and were going to talk to the RVR after 8am (I wasn't near a radio to hear this part, nor did I hear any public comments sent in to the station). Will try and remember to use the BBCplayer listen again function thingy tonight.

Link below. The anti-brigade comments start at 1.15.55 (affected farmer plus an irrelevant woman from Bexhill, goodness knows why she is moaning). The second part of the feature starts at 2.12.50 and this was mainly an interview with an RVR chap who came across very well.

Sorry for veering off topic again, but in reply to Beancounter, the Ballykelly photograph was taken on 17th October, 1970. The train was the RPSI ' S Colmcille Railtour hauled by 171. Ballykelly was being run down at the time - the last of the Shackletons based there left in March 1971- and the airfield was about to be handed over to the army.
The RAF was keen to participate in a "last steam crossing" of the famous runway, hence the posed shot with all the RAF personnel.
