Thse oddities should not be dismissed. The Parry people mover seems to be holding its own on the Stourbridge branch

The PPM does well there because it's a self-contained shuttle with no conflicting moves, one train working, no intermediate stops and no risk of a signal check. Every time a PPM has been tried in any situation more complex than the Stourbridge Town branch it's been less than successful.

However the Stadler RS1 is a very successful and mature design (20 years old, nearly 500 built according to Wikipedia) so in some ways the question is: why has it taken so long for any one in Britain to think about copying it?

I buy The Times and when I read the article, I thought it was utter nonsense. It was suggesting that "cheap trains" like this would permit the re-opening of lines such as Aberystwyth-Carmarthen as if the cost of the units was the only thing preventing that.

Like you, my thoughts immediately went to Pacers.

It is really just a press release from a company in Warwick trying to sell something.

Read post #3477. It really is fantasy as far as lines like the WSR are concerned.

A well deserved award for the WSR Special Events Planning Team. <BJ>

''Members of the WSR Special Events Planning Team (SEPT) received an award at the annual Heritage Railway Association Awards evening for their planning leading to the successful S&D Gala in March 2016. WSR's Andy Forster, Don Bishop, James Mills and John Cronin (SEPT Chair) were there to receive the award''.

ENGINE FOUND BURIED BESIDE THE WSR’s MINEHEAD BRANCH

Over the weekend members of the WSR’s Cutting Back Team and Minehead Loco Crew continued to clear the undergrowth from the lineside at Kentsford between Watchet & Washford. During some digging to unblock a hidden culvert the shout went out that an engine had been found buried !!!!

As the team gathered round we all began to think, was it a Pannier, Prairie or even a Grange or Star !

Unfortunately it turned out to be an engine out of an old car, sorry !

As 'strategic reserves' go, I have seen better.

Oops, there's my security clearance gone for a Burton....;)

Interesting that the lamp standard on the corner is still in situ, though it has changed colour and may be serving a different function now.

Im sure I can remember the trees there, not the one in the middle of the road but the two smaller ones? I'm not that old, but i may be imagining it of course! When were they taken down?

That Minehead shot is interesting; a rare example of a road narrowing project rather than a road widening one :)

Given Minehead's development, the tree was probably there before the road.....
