Hmmm ... maybe on a 37, with its hotch-potch of bodyside grills and nowhere to put any horizontal bands. I thought Large Logo livery was as good as anything for a 37.

Hymeks and Deltics, 47s and the later 25s were much more suited to their earlier liveries with horizontal banding than they were to slab-sided blue.

Ex-works Rail Blue might have been smart in the sense that a newly painted front door looks smart, but as a livery for motive power it did nothing to suggest speed or motion.

While this discussion on British Rail era diesel liveries is doubtless fascinating to many, might it be better located?

Tell you something else Ive just remembered from the early part of the rail blue era, the underframes and bogies on multiple units and coaches were painted brown for a short time. I remember the Manchester-Bury class 504 EMUs having this for a bit, be around 1970 ish, but quickly reverted to black

They must have been the only ex SR hauled stock to receive it. Quite a lot of NPCCS did, but no Bulleid coaches received B/G.

As far as I know, three GWR Hawksworth coaches did, a few LMS Stanier coaches, mostly porthole brakes, with a few sleepers, and several Gresley and Thompson buffets, the last of which ran until 1978 and were the last pre nationalisation coaches

But conversely I think I saw a Mk II in SR green back in the 1960s. Or is that another of my silly dreams?

I have seen one on film at Bournemouth West - I don't think it ran over the S&D Though.....................

Did a MK2 or Blue-Grey vehicle venture over the hallowed metals?

20 BR Mk2 FK's were delivered in BR(S) green in the mid 1960s - S13387 to S13406, one just sneaks into view on this shot from David Christie:

No, the only Mark 1 BGs which were overall blue were ones converted to newspaper traffic which had the brake facility removed. The bulk of them were blue/grey
