But it may matter when you come to take a photo at the destination. I still say you'd be miffed if one of your beloved Duchesses turned up on a trip in SR malachite with sunshine lettering.

And how exactly do HR know it will be black when anyone leaking info out of Carnforth is shot by the SS ?, Could easily be total fabrication or someone on the wind up.

I imagine some youthful fans would love to see Scotsman, sans deflectors, turned out in bright blue with red lining and a big yellow number four on the tender. But I'm not sure it would look great.

A Duchess in malachite though… or Lizzie maybe? That just might work…

Wind up or not, it's certainly fuelled the flames on here. :)

It is some time since I read Heritage Railway, even in Smith's Reading Rooms :)Shamefullyembarrased:) but I seem to recall a common source of news headlines in it were 'lineside rumours or reports', which I have always taken to mean the discussions that photographers have while awaiting a train - HR appears to consider them a very good source of copy (allegedly :Muted::Wasntme:)

Yes I probably would but I very much doubt any of the owners would every contemplate such a thing, however if it's a livery that is correct for it's class, whether or not the loco in question actually carried it, does not worry me in the slightest.

It has been said already but bears repetition.
The issue of HR which contains the "photos" of 35018 in black livery is the APRIL issue.
Ah, but it may be a double bluff!!!

It's slow news on 35018, which is why the story has gained the legs it has on here, even though it is seen in the April 1-encompassing edition.

However, if it being in black means those in the south 'disown' it, then it's their loss, and I would love to see it romping about the hills in a location where I actually don't have to spend three times the ticket value just to get in position to experience an MN at work.

One side of that actually went black though! Have to say I wouldn't mind seeing a MN in black, it's something a bit different. At the end of the day though Black, Blue, Green, Red or Stroudley Improved Green, I wouldn't put anything past West Coast! Why is it I have visions of a certain person there reading this and having a good old Mutley type snigger to himself!

Well, I'm quite happy as it looks like they've restored the unique bits of the locomotive, so it's only a lick of paint as far as I am concerned. Top marks for resisting the temptation to standardise it.

Notable that it isn't lined - which would have been expensive. So not a lot of extra expense getting it to undercoat and then adding a top coat of black rather than green. I wouldn't be surprised to see it in an authentic livery once the time comes to actually run in revenue service; meanwhile someone has generated some publicity at fairly marginal cost by painting it black.

Strange that they only show one side and so far no lining out, it could be a possible running in livery , at least thats what i'm hoping so how about a test run on april 1st ;)

A white strip along her side and she will be in British India Line company colours! Now that would be different...

Mr Bulleid didn't like them 'detuned/rebuilt' etc whatever you want to call them in that condition did he? If 35018 was lined out that would suit it rather well.

None of the previous 10A returnees has been sent out for testing in final livery which seems a sensible precedent and precautionary measure when further work may be required that could damage paintwork.
The most startling break with tradition is the press engagement. Very welcome even if it turns out to be an intended wind up. We all remember the games played when 45699 emerged.
