with a refreshed 31 on the subs and the N2 on the quads...Next year maybe GER 853 will be ready too....shame we can't have the NRM J69 running in front of that...Firmly in the realms of wouldn't it be nice, I know

The Suburban is instead of the Quads week as the Quads are out of service for the year. The Quads requires maintenance and lot of it.

Yes they need maintenance but not sure where the 'lot of it' comes from. The roofs need attention and they will come into shops when there is a slot for them long enough to put up scaffolding to work on the roofs.

On the Friends of the North Norfolk Railway Facebook in January this year Mark Middleton said that in a post replying to a post about the Quads. From what I have seen on that group Mark Middleton knows lot about the be hired the scenes at the NNR. His exact post was ''Repairs to the roof and roof felt are the main jobs, for which the set has to 'dry out' before work can commence. Whilst it's in, it needs a full brake block change, and I guess exam of the running gear.''

I wonder how the roof canvases were applied? Especially as I thought the Quads had their own undercover storage. We've yet to have to redo a roof many of which have been on far longer than these have.

How long have the Quads been back in service? They're a lovely set although I did enjoy my ride in the Subs at last years diesel gala.

Having just spent a day in NNR C&W meetings I can assure you that the roofs need some remedial work but should not need re-covering, and Mark's comments may have slightly over dramatised the situation. The set is scheduled in the sheds at Weybourne for work at the back end of the year. Suppose it's what you classify as 'a lot' in C&W terms, the work required is heavy maintenance rather than severe.

Any news on the turntable at Holt? Is it just staying in storage for 2017?

Just in case it is of any interest. This was on Nat Pres. It looks a wreck and from what I gather the request for £1500 is unrealistic...but it does appear to have a GER underframe, if that is of any use http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/232279722056

Quite an early one that one by the looks of it. It also looks to have wooden headstocks, which sadly are unsuitable for us...

Interesting news and a bit more explanation about the absence of the quads from service this year. Thanks - exciting

Just read in this month's SR magazine that there is a possibility the F5 new build project may move to the NNR.

Ironic...and delightful that the vestigial M&GN should be turning into such a magnificent repository of things Great Eastern. I may have to buy the mag now for my flight on Friday.

I'm in a wouldn't it be nice, dreamer mood this morning but it strikes me that this shortish but wonderful railway has a number of real unique draws that could be built on even further given a big lottery win
    1. The unique collection of East Anglian locomotives and rolling stock - I'd love to see them displayed for public access when not in use
    2. The increasingly comprehensive North and East suburban London collection

It'd be great to see a museum where perhaps the display could alternate between the two and perhaps bring in the NRM GER locos or N7 for periods of loaned display

    3. I love the idea of a short agricultural railway with demonstration exchange sidings utilising Wissington and giving rides using the Wisbech and Upwell carriage

Anyway. Back to work, enough dreaming. Keep up the good work. I'll do my Euromillions just in case I can help any of that come about

While I've personally always had a preference for 'main line' steam locomotives, I must confess I have warmed up to the charms of many industrial engines, there's such great variety in appearance and size to them all.

I find it rather sad really that many industrials that served heritage railways in their early days admirably, were so swiftly and rather coldly cast aside the moment they gained bigger, more glamourous main line motive power. As you point out yourself, a good many of them have a historical value in their own right, both for the work they did orginally, and subsequently their pioneering services for the heritage movement in it's infancy. So it's nice to see the NNR recognises this fact and retains Ring Haw despite looking somewhat a little out of place these days. I quite like it myself, a rather handsome, well proportioned loco I'd say.

Few other railways do this, apart from notably the Bluebell Railway, which arguably have the most significant pioneering engine of the lot, a locomtive that actually helped build the railway itself!
