Funnily enough, I found a long-lost Stephenson-Rastrick drawing of an S&D pacific in Search Engine. Really pioneering stuff, too. Apparently it could only go backwards to keep the soot out of the eyes of the crew. The problem was that they had to scrap one every time it reached the end of the line as there were no turning facilities, and this is why there is no longer any evidence of them having existed. Apart from the drawings. Which I have conveniently binned as they fell apart. Rather like your joke ;)...

They didn't go backwards, they had return flue boilers with the driver at the opposite end to the fireman. Unfortunately this led to industrial action regarding whether or not the driver should be responsible for shutting the fireman's end doors :)

Really? Isn't all this banter tongue in cheek? Maybe it's you taking it too seriously

    Wye Aye...

Meanwhile... the work on 35018 continues. Would be funny if they did the mainline test the same day as Scotsman going north on S+C with everyone looking t'other way...

just watch out for Klingons on the starboard bow jim , is it true that Carnforth have acquired the blue prints for a Romulan cloaking devise, and are going to trial it on 35018:)

No. They've got access to Harry Potter's invisibility cloak. He left it on the train pulled by Hogwarts Castle. :)

thats a point did the driver put in a near miss report when a blue flying Anglia appeared in the four foot 10 feet away from the engine?

Another notable difference between 35018 and the other Merchant Navies (apart from the previously noted routing of the water feed pipes) was the position of the front sand boxes, which were higher and had very long filler pipes - apparently they proved awkward to fill and later locos had them re-sited, though 35018 was never changed. This also appears - from the photo shown up thread - to have been replicated in the overhaul.

See e.g. post #315 on this page https://www.national-preservation.com/threads/35018-british-india-line.830575/page-16 and compare the front sandbox fillers with e.g. Clan Line http://www.ianwyliephoto.com/Photography/Steam-Trains/i-VsrnzQW (not my photo).

Time for the bow tie, screwdriver and a blue telephone box to back and see it. I rather think a bow tie would go with my black hat anyway...

There's a picture of British India Line in Heritage Railway magazine taken at Carnforth in February of her in shiny black livery!

Is that the same as her on page 16. Just that details on the livery are something I'm trying to chase down.

I've just found page 16, but can't see any photos (not on my iPad anyway) so don't know the answer to that.

You need a Fez - Fezs are cool (though probably not totally advisable for railway enthusiasts, as they are likely to blow off when you stick your head out of the (non-mainline, of course!) window, and their Red colour will not be appreciated by operators!
