As much as I would love to see this fantastic machine run again I actually do not think this appropriate at all. This is a priceless and unique loco that has been in the collection since the end of the second world war. Swanage haven't got anwhere for it to go under cover either so where is it going to be 'displayed'? Don't the have the two ex-American Pullmans from the WC train plus Pullman car Bertha (Ex-Bluebell) all of which were going to go to Swanage once the have under cover accommodation sorted.... 10 ears ago for Bertha? Where are they all now??

Reckon somebody pushed the button on this two days early myself...

On reflection I bet you are right. No sign of any corresponding press release on the NRM website.

The trouble with clever CMS systems is that you have to understand the way they actually behave, bugs and all... It might be operator trouble, but I can imagine techie humour to build a feature into a CMS that if you attempt to schedule something for publication for midnight on April 1st then it doesn't honour the scheduling.

It doesn't read right for a spoof, it's too major a change and relates to something not well enough known.

From what I've heard, the Pullmans are bound elsewhere now. I agree, though that the statement in the press release - The Swanage Railway has an outstanding record for preserving and displaying items, something which is paramount to the museum - is laughable. As far as I'm aware they've got Corfe Castle Goods Shed, and I'm not even sure if it is used to display anything. Not their finest decision in my view.

Might be in a minority here, but I would rather see it running on the Swanage than stuffed and mounted in York museum...

I'm sure it would be nice - but with half our locos still stored outside, where would we put it? I can't see it would be responsible to take on ownership of another locomotive unless we already had the rest of the collection under cover.

Which to me is the nub of the issue with the T3. Unless there are other announcements in the offing, where exactly is it going to go? AFAIK, the only under cover space on the railway is the Swanage goods shed (used for carriage restoration); the loco shed (not easily accessible by the public) or Corfe Castle goods shed (home to Secundus and a museum of small artefacts). None of those looks like an easy place to display the T3 - so where exactly will it go so that it has a level of public access and protection the equivalent of what it had at Shildon? Surely it is not going to be stored outside in a seaside location exposed to salty sea air - is it?

I share your desire to see that but suspect that outcome is at best unlikely without replacing nearly all of it.

Southern 4-4-0. There's already the LSWR T9 and SECR D, there only so much history can be told by these three.

Would that be such an issue with it no longer being National Collection effectively ?, I've no problem with machines having replacement parts to keep them operational, We are not exactly awash with operational pre grouping 4-4-0's anyway, 30120 is about it now Truro has been put back in the box.

This loco did not appear on the NRM's latest (Feb 17) disposal list.
    https://group.sciencemuseum.org.uk/object-disposal/

The same web page suggests opinion would have been sought from the Railway Heritage Designation Advisory Board. But, unlike the old Railway Heritage Committee, this board does not seem to publish its decisions on line.

No one has, from all Comments elsewhere this is happening. Agree with your concerns though, just can't see how she can be stored better by SR than the NRM.

"Duplicate of what in the collection? And if so, what are the criteria for defining which are "core" and which "duplicate" parts of the collection?"

another express passenger 4-4-0 from the same period I imagine.

The Swanage Railway will not allow the locomotive to deteriorate and it will be its decision about what happens next.
The locomotive has been outside at KX for over a month now and no one even raised a single concern about that.

It will be going to Swanage where it will be utterly adored and cherished.
Maybe everyone should see the potential in this rather than all the negatives. We could potentially see the T3 return to steam if Swanage see fit. It hasn't run since 1945, this would be epic.

Temporarily stored outside under a cover is a bit different to being on display next to the south coast in all that lovely salty air.

The problem has to be how and where to display it, I can not see any Railway allowing a historic engine that it owns to deteriorate, In past cases, it has been where the owner has had the responsibility to ensure a loco is protected, but has not that has been the source of problems, one option in the case of 563 may be under the canopy on the bay platform, it may at lease offer some protection, whilst she is surveyed i have to say another active genuine LSWR 4-4-0 would be very much in demand .
