Looking at the t0408c timing sheet I see the Engine + POB are booked on to the Quay Branch stub for servicing at DR 194 rather dropping forward from Jubilee Sidings into the usual metal caged/headshunt area. Will be interesting to see if that's where it actually ends up this afternoon. I think the last steam loco onto the Quay stub was Tangmere for an overnight lay-over back in 2012 (seen as I passed but I didn't have my camera with me that night).

Sadly just a variant today of the usual. The difference the whole train moved south for servicing. it wasn't split between WCRC stock and the POB.

Lord Dowding passes through Moreton then comes to a halt to wait for a service train before gaining access to the single line . The class 57 seems to be doing all the work on departure.

I'm sorry to bring the debate back to an old chestnut but this video clip illustrates exactly why you can't trust what will happen at the back of a train when a diesel is involved.
The train was not overloaded. 10 plus a diesel is on the heavy side but not under normal running on fairly level track.
The train was on time and waiting for a path so there was no real urgency to get away.
Despite all the above, the diesel gives the train a shove to get it going.

Nothing wrong with that, of course, because it makes it easier for the crew and possibly they wanted to conserve water (although not allowing the loco to lift the valves might have been a better strategy).

But if you want to experience a steam charter with something approaching authentic performance then clearly these trips are ones to avoid.

My short offering from this morning, with 34052 passing through Swanwick.

    Enjoy!

Was it waiting for a path or held because it was late? Later arrival than the booked 12:35 into Weymouth suggests it should have gone first and crossed that 444 at Dorchester not been held waiting for it at Moreton. The 57 aiding a get away to catch up on time.

Irrespective the WC and the 57 both looked good in the sun at Weymouth.

There may have been another reason for the diesel being so heavily involved, such as a need to conserve fuel...

I think there was a cock up on the timing front as 34046 was due to pass Moreton at 12.16 and the service train 12.18 which is impossible as they would have met each other on the single line , both were on time so 34046 had to wait until the line was clear .

There was no water tanker at Weymouth when we arrived. The run from Moreton onwards was subdued and we kept losing time.

If you want authentic then you should have had a loco change at Bournemouth shed with a freshly coaled and watered loco and crew.

I was on UKRT's The Andover Fist, which passed The Royal Wessex at Northam when it was (presumably) taking water. A Bells and Two Tones tanker then met us in the Eastern Docks to replenish our train's water supplies. If it was the same one that was due to meet The Royal Wessex at Weymouth that might explain a delay on arrival.

    What's wrong with a Class 57? I must admit I'm surprised that there weren't gauging issues. :)
