The time when the whole Science Museum Group is privatised could be sooner than one thinks. The present Government contains ideologues who would be happy if all artistic, cultural and historical, Government funded activities were sold off.

Now there's an idea. I'm starting a new-build Great Bear project. Who's with me?

I'm sure all of the NHS PFI schemes which were started under Labour from 1997, and have since failed, are totally blaming the Tories for the financial mess of privatization that has occurred from 13 years of Blair and Brown...

No really, I get the Tories have some ideologies not in line with my view or others, but let's not single them out when the supposed party of the people has been selling off the family silver as well for years - and would continue to do so. Every opportunity to nationalize the railways, for example, never taken.

No Tory lover here - but a bit of balance wouldn't go amiss.

Utterly irrelevant what Labour believe at the moment as they have little influence on anything. Neither do I understand the relevance of your post in this context.

Spotted on the M3 this morning (12/4/17) at about 7:30am between junctions 6 and 7 a sheeted over steam loco heading away from London. Due to it being fully sheeted could not provide any additional identification other that it appeared to have sage green (?) cylinder cladding. Anyone any ideas?

Or how about this? 10 out of 10 for accessibility. (Hard to see the exhibit though.)

One of my favourite memories is at the age of 14 and having a day volunteering down the SVR getting off a 150 and watching 7325 come storming through Rowley Regis, on its way home up Old Hill Bonk, it looked and sounded magic! I'd love to see it back in action.

I'd love to see one of these in action too. Hate to criticise, but it's a shame it has to be two thirds hidden to allow access to the footplate.

I must take some exception to the suggestion that 563 is of little interest in the National Collection with all the status and protection that one assumes will derive there from.

It is the largest and most successful of the Adams class locos on the LSWR. It is the only 4-4-0 outside cylindered loco in the National Collection (until the last few weeks). It was carefully selected by none other than A B Macleod as deserving of preservation as far back as May 1948, and probably, knowing Macleod, for quite a bit before then. It was restored and preserved by the Southern Region of BR when BR was in it's infancy. It was so highly regarded that it did not suffer the fate of other locos earmarked for preservation but was at Clapham Museum when it opened together with LBSCR Terrier Boxhill.

It is a priceless example of superlative Victorian engineering and design. It should have remained vested in the National Collection.

Still no word from the Swanage... I am not impressed.

    Cheers,
    Julian

We're going off topic but yes a GW mogul's a rather decent piece of kit, at least with the SVR's Mogul in the engine house it lets those less able to have a look and get close to the footplate, I'd love to see 7325/9303 back in action though.

You know sitting there with arms folded looking grumpy isn't gonna make this fact go away, so you'll have to accept it sooner or later, as it's not changing. Yes it is somewhat sad that it has not remained in the national collection, but what's done is done.

Though I'm sure they'll be in contact any moment now, as they know how important people's approval on this forum is, and especially if somebody's not impressed... the shame of them for not doing it sooner really...!

When my father took me to the Clapham Museum, probably at the age of about 10 years, I came away with two souvenirs; a picture postcard of Mallard and a plastic 'Prestige Wall Plaque' of 563 which remained on my bedroom wall for about 20 years. I remember being disappointed when I first visited the new York museum that she wasn't there.
