35018 British India Line

Paints froth always amuses me, but I don't regard the purists as idiots. They are merely fellow enthusiasts who are passionate about livery authenticity.

 

Never felt the need to be celibate in order to enjoy this hobby.

 

i bet thats not what your other half says when you come home smelling of steam oil, ash, and grease, when she says get those off before you come in the house, its not because she is turned on by the dirty look and smell, its because you just plain stink .

 

Speak for yourself mate. Some of us shower before we go home.

 

Personally, if I were the owner of a steam locomotive that cost probably in the region of £1million to restore to main line working order, I'd ensure that the £6k or so (at least) it would cost me to paint it would be spent on making it appear as closely as possible as it did when it was outshopped from the works, in BR lined green, ie: as historically correct as possible given the requirements imposed by the 21st Century. However, as I'm not the owner such views are of little merit but we all know that rebuilt Bulleid pacifics appeared in one livery only and that's the way it was. That's purely my personal opinion and therefore I recognise it is of little value in the scheme of things.

 

It's going to raise a few eyebrows when it's turned out in WC maroon complete with WCRC markings.

 

But the real question is will the people who pay for it (i.e. the paying passengers) be that bothered what colour it is - I suspect most will not, yes there will be some moaning mini's who do - but most probably don't really give a dam as long as it is shiny in all the right places, makes the right noises and gives them a good day out.

 

It's interesting that some posters are going on about the livery before we even know for sure what it will be. Let's just (a) celebrate another steam locomotive being fully overhauled to a condition where it can run on NR, (b) accept that the owner has a right to choose the livery, and (c) acknowledge that even amongst ourselves we don't all agree as to what livery we would like best.

 

It will come out in BR lined black and to avoid the colonialist connections will be re-named "The Black Smith".

OH NO, i now have this strange vision of 35018 actually being turned out for her test run with " Yorkshire Tea Line nameplates

 

Possibly... Depends how much sponsorship money's paid

 

Any further news yet on 35018's likely re enter into service? its been seen in steam several times now, at Carnforth, but has yet to venture out on test, unless there is still some snags the engineering team are working through, the test runs were reported as being " imminent" and that was before GBX , has she actually got any firm bookings for any tours because i would have thought that being an class 8, she would be a engine west coast would want availible before the main season, i think we can almost rule out any participation in any railtours in July , unles the delay is because its been decided to repaint her now, and not later and she is going to sneak in under the radar .

 

Dosn't look like it's happening with 35018 does it? Although you never know with West Coast do you?

 

I think it was mentioned on here a couple of months ago, that she was not listed on the Network Rail System, so could not venture out onto the mainline yet.

 

It was, but you would have thought that the engine would have been registered as soon as it was ready, and in the early days i can remember reading that when she first moved to Carnforth a spokesman saying, carnforth would not be paying for the overhaul? so whilst it may say its owned by DS, is it? is there a silent partner who needs to pay a bill for BIL, before she is registered? its the only reason i can think of otherwise, given the lack of large engines at Carnforth i cant come up with any other reason.

 

It's not ready? That might be another reason....
