The lateness of the charter hitting the WCML may mean that it is behind everything else and for the benefit of those on board I hope that works to everyone's advantage. It will be interesting to see how quickly it actually gets down from Farington.

Only Diesel that can match the 100MPH class 86 timings are the DRS class 68's, Don't expect any of them to be up for grabs anytime soon unless you're willing to pay a hire fee.

89001 is being restored at Barrow Hill, Perhaps a viable alternative to 86259 ?, Pretty sure the Freightliner 86/6's are 75MPH restricted without new bogies/wheels and some other work.

What are 50s and 55s rated at speedwise? Honest question as I have no idea!

I think 50's are 90 these days but not 100% sure, Deltics can still do the ton but they'd never get there in time, It's acceleration as much as top speed you need to meet this path and all diesels bar 68's dont have the horses required.

Deltic is 3,300 HP, Class 86 is 5000, That's the crucial bit despite both being plated for 100MPH or more.

Looks like this has been terminated at W atford Junction according to RTT : "This service was cancelled between Watford Junction and London Euston due to a problem with the traction equipment"

Not a good ending to what has been a day that hasn't gone to plan for the passengers.

I'm a big fan of the 89, but it's never exactly been the last word in reliability either, has it…?

Bit of a farce in the end. Good run down WCML until Rugby, indeed we were "only" 70 late at one point, then diverted via Northampton and we were all turfed off at MK to catch a delayed LM train which called at all stations to Watford then Harrow and Euston reached at 0016. RTC and train manager were pretty good at making sure everyone would get home. The Cardiff connection at Crewe was made with 2 mins to spare!

Despite all the delays, it was an absolutely excellent trip in wonderful weather, and I really would not have missed it. The Scot makes a wonderful noise when it's being worked hard and as someone said upthread Shap and Ais Gill in one trip (and unassisted), it doesnt get much better.

Class 47s are 2580 Hp. So about half that of an 86.

It sounds like the old business of closing the Weedon route after a certain time that, of course, adds to journey time. But I did wonder whether the charter was destined to terminate early so that the stock could get to Southall rather quicker than otherwise might have been the case. Despite that, there was so much that was good about the day and the way that WCRC retrieved a bad situation that was not of their making. I'm glad I wasn't on it but for those who were, it certainly looks as though everyone tried hard to make the day work for them.

Sorry but if we had a dislike button, this video would get it. It may be ok for a helicopter to track across the front of a train but for one of these GoPro copters to do so is another matter entirely. And if it's an enthusiast rather than a random member of the public at the controls then they should definitely know why and know better. A personal opinion of course.
