Looks like an hour and 13 mins at Whitacre loop. Thought I might try to get to Coleshill to board but not after seeing that.

Why not - this is one of 2 watering stops hence the time needed to complete filling of 2 locomotives.

Panniers come with limitations y'know, That being around 30 miles water range as well as 45MPH.

Not really a surprise a Large Prairie is being rumoured for future with better speed and range.

It wouldn't be a ramble if it didn't hang about here and there, although an hour's stop just six minutes after Coleshill means some reading matter is in order. Looking forward to the rare track through Coalville.

Bit of confusion here. Tickets came today with a message that we have to go back the way we came and not via Leicester because of a pathing problem. Yet RTT shows us going via Leicester as that's why I'm on it. On this occasion, I actually hope that VT has got it wrong!

Vintage trains confirmed to me on phone this morning that it is indeed out and back via Coalville; return departure time from Burton-on-Trent same as previously advertised, now arriving back Tyseley around 7pm.

Fair enough except that VT claims that the return has to be the way it is "due to pathing constraints". That makes no sense as we can all see via RTT that Network Rail has organised a path for the train to Leicester and for the return. If what they mean is that the path that has been given by NR for some reason creates a problem for the way that they and WCRC want to operate this trip then fine, so why don't they say that?

On this particular occasion I'm not very pleased to see an implied criticism being made by VT of NR and their inability to provide a suitable path. No doubt as it's VT we may get some clarity on here at some point as the trip has definitely taken a turn for the worse as it stands at present.

I cannot see this happening in the foreseeable future. I do hope that you are not misreading what I said to Tony Streeter in a recent SR when asked what other tank loco's I thought might be good on the main line. There is a world of difference between saying that a Big Prairie would be good, and actually putting one on the main line, not least the several hundred thousand pounds required to make it happen.

Does anyone know if the change to the original route means the panniers will be running bunker first back to Tyseley, or will they be turned at Burton?

Yes. It really is a ramble today. 50 min from Small Heath Junction to Coleshill tells you all you need to know. Have spent as much time stationary as moving with trains passing us on all sides.

Standing in the cold breeze at a desolate Coleshill Parkway killing off a 30 minute delay. Train apparently looped at Castle Bromwich, so NR seems to be against us today.

Presume there's a defect on the main at Whitacre Jcn as everything was being routed via the loop, So watering there wasn't an option, so presume it took water prior to Water Orton then went straight through Whitacre loop, hence why it went from about 24 down to 55 up.

Possible it will have to do the same manouvre on te return so don't trust the timings too much.

At least we are allowed to wander the platform at Nuneaton for a bit. Pretty smart planning, really.

Fairly lucky that Nuneaton is bi-directionally signalled

Yes. Whitacre Loop not available today hence the tweaked times and the welcome photostop at Nuneaton. And as I guessed we can't do Leicester because it would have made the day too long for the crews.

Arrived early at Burton. Typical Pannier action so far but even with the frequent water stops it could easily have been done in a short day if NR had been more obliging with times. But as the name says it is meant to be a ramble.

Today also reminded me of the VT on-train regime. You WILL remain seated. You WILL enjoy yourself. Maybe people in the Midlands can't be trusted.....
