Busy day at Cranmore today. As well as craning the boiler into 41313 we also took advantage of the crane's presence to swap four bogies between two coaches and lift one of the diesel shunters to extract a wheel set.

I must admit that I can quite understand why some people, like Paulhitch, go on (and on) about these Class 2s; what a lovely restoration job on a lovely little useful tank loco - even though it isn't a GWR product! Thank you very much for posting these super photos-definitely another feather in cap of the fascinating heritage railway world.

Yes indeed. A more modern (and user friendly) take on a 45xx.

I continue to have great admiration for our volunteers and workers in the heritage industry. That 2MT looks almost like new!

I have a great regard for the 2MTs both Ivatt and Standard in preservation. 78019 remains one of my favourite locomotives and sadly missed, though ably replaced by the Ivatt variant and 78018 I believe?

We need an Ivatt line up one day methinks.

What to me is more astounding, is that in a very short time thats now 3 ivatts that have been, or soon will be back in restored to working order, by the IOWSR/ ESR connection.

For their size, they have a rather authoritative exhaust. Nice to listen to.

Only 'Juno' (currently on loan to the NRM) remaining to be fully restored from the Ivatt Trust gift of 4 locos. I'm not sure if there are any short to medium term plans to restore her though? Can anyone from IOWSR provide any insight?

I think that it would be fair to regard it as the "Strategic Reserve" for the IOWSR

Really impressed with what the team at Cranmore have done on this, but just as important the speed which this engine has been overhauled. I am not sure if I have this quite right, but am I correct that this was the engine with not much work done since withdrawal? To get this stage in such a short period of time is very good (and hard) work indeed. What are the plans for this team once this engine is complete?

Once 41313 is complete, we have our own Andrew Barclay 'Lady Nan' to get through a ten yearly overhaul. Due to the extent of the last overhaul this is not expected to take too long or be too costly.

After that, we will have to see. We are always keen to hear of suitable projects and as we tend to concentrate on one loco at a time and use volunteer labour, we find we can be both relatively quick and reasonable in terms of cost.

How do you get the last bit of boiler cladding on behind the tanks and properly fixed please?

It's in 4 pieces. Top two fit on then bottom two slide between boiler and tank. Then they bolt together. There is a small gap between boiler and tank to work in!

The boiler bands then fit on in the normal way.

Personally, I would regard the close collaboration of the ESR and IOWSR as an outstanding example of how the preservation movement can achieve great things when working closely together, thanks of course in no small measure to the generosity of the Ivatt Trust.

There is also the very generous bequest to the IOWSR that allowed it to buy from the ESR the Stroudley LBSCR E1 0-6-0 tank as part of this arrangement.

I havent seen much of progress with the LBSCR E1 tank proposals. It is undercover in Train Story at Havenstreet. I dont think I have seen anything in print about what the planned drastic overhaul will be. Perhaps others can enlighten us. Some form of engineering and historical survey must have been carried out by now since it's arrival at Havenstreet a few years ago, but nothing has come into the public domain so far. From my own assessment of the loco at Havenstreet and my knowledge of Brighton locos very little of the loco is going to remain 'as is'. Perhaps the frames wheels and motion and cylinders, but pretty much everything else is not original or life expired.

The E1 acquisition by the IOWSR was arquably the catalyst for the deal with the Ivatt Trust. We now have 2 of the Ivatt Trust locos returned to steam in rapid time when compared to the many many years out of use, and a third soon to steam again.

It would be nice to hear of the plans for the LBSCR E1. Some evaluations and costings must have been made and hopefully a new boiler design submitted to insurers for apporoval?

    Cheers,
    Julian

Well I am absolutely not in a position to comment with any authority. However I do know that,as part of the assessment of the task, the motion components have been established as those she started life with. The connecting rods, with their marine big ends, have been on display.
