actually i think they shouldn't line it, large cylcling lion emblem on tender and just the engine number, same as 70000 was turned out,

Ordinarily , yes, but unlined black could be about as authentic as you can get, for an unauthentic livery, they were on paper mixed traffic, until BR classsed them as an 8P, so there could have only ever had been two possible liveries, i'm hoping she might reappear later in Br Green but if she doesnt then unlined black dont look so bad, it just shows just how imposing a rebuilt Bulleid is

A bit like saying if my grandma had dangly bits she'd be my grandfather. I think it's been said before classifying them as mixed traffic was to get authorisation for wartime construction. A livery is either authentic or it's not and this isn't, just as well it's not part of the 50th celebrations on the Southern.

The BR plain black might be an option, but personally I like the fact that in 2017 WCRC do something different. While Green could be applied and be traditional, it is again looking to the past and backwards. Obviously everyone likes it when an engine is done with a heritage scheme in mind, a tribute to its former work and legacy. I'm sure that BIL would look fantastic in Green, but when Galatea was done in Maroon it took on an identity that was all of its own. It is an engine working now, and another take on its appearance just gives a look that identifies it with what is happening today. BIL could do this when lined out in BR Black, and I'm sure would look powerful and resplendent. I also think WCRC do enjoy deliberately being different and that is another reason they would choose other than BR Green. It could stay Black and return to Green like Britannia on test, but that paint on the engine looks like its done to a standard that it is staying and would just need lining out.

Regardless the only ones who know will be WCRC.

You mean to say your grandma didnt have Dangly bits, mine did, right down to her knees :p
As i said, in an ideal world she would be in green, but its a loco owners choice to paint their loco what ever colour they chose. most people would be happy that there is another MN out on the mainline .

It's only paint for goodness sake . Instead of moaning that it doesn't suit your purists eyes just be grateful that someone has spent a lot of time and money restoring yet another Barry wreck to working order. It might only be in black whilst being run in, much like Tornado was painted grey initially. As people have said before, the owner can paint it whatever colour he wishes to, it's his prerogative and no one else's.

And there's the rub. If we're debating authenticity as a historical recreation, then it has to be green - and meanwhile, let's ignore all the other changes. Otherwise, and for those of us who don't remember them in steam (I post date not just the Bulleid's, but their immediate WR replacements on the Exeter run), there's the option of alternate liveries. Black is an interesting nod to historical "might have been"; other options might be available.

Bugga the paint, enjoy the engineering and the hard graft (and somebody's money) that's gone in to getting another wreck back to life.

Have to agree with the sentiment. The engineering done on BIL really looks impressive. Part of the interest I like about the current scene is that engines are modified to the needs today. BIL has had a load of work done to the tender, which has seen the coal capacity extended and parts moved on the tender top. The tender was already higher and modified, but this surely increases the engines range significantly.

A massive credit to the team at Carnforth who have excelled again at returning an engine to steam.

Leave it black...line it out and slap WCR on the tender in big yellow letters. 2017 authentic...simple.

I could understand your argument if, as John suggested, it was going to have "West Coast Railway Company" on the tender, but surely painting it in BR black (lined or unlined) is nothing more than an (incorrect) nod to the past - it certainly isn't looking to the present or future. If it's turned out in BR black, as looks likely, then it's nothing more than DS, JS and WCRC sticking two fingers up at the enthusiast fraternity again, or at least the significant proportion who aspire towards authenticity. Let's not pretend otherwise. While WCRC products may appeal to this enthusiast group, they are not WCRC's core market, so they can pretty much do as they please in regard to authenticity and it won't make a jot of difference to their business.

Personally, I think the Merchant Navy will look good in black and I'll be interested to see it in the flesh. IMHO, it's potentially much more interesting than a badly finished red jubilee that isn't even close to being the correct shade to even pretend it's a "what if".

Ooooooh - paint froth ! Never mind the fact that we have another much needed 8P in the offing. It's there to prevent rust, not just for the benefit of photters. I'm sure one day she will appear in some other colour - Farrow & Ball anyone?

Without being concerned really I do find the decision making interesting. If it is to be BR black, 45699 could legitimately have carried it but a more colourful choice was made. With 35018 a colour other than black is an option yet black has been selected, for the time being at least. Both look smart in my opinion but the rationale eludes me, particularly as they will be without a green one very soon.
