Very much so and part of the point being made. 10A was not a last resort for this loco and chances are it would have run sooner in other hands. That does not decry the acheivement but I do not fully go along with the veneration in this case. Very well done indeed but lets keep things in perspective too.

No need. Red maple leaves and a yellow cobra on the Squadron badges she carries does the job nicely. :)

Just out of interest, how many locos have you restored/helped to restore to running order?

That's going to look rather nice when it's lined out.

Ah, much nicer than the first video posted.

Valve spindle glands look to be blowing a bit - I know rebuilt Bulleids are trickier than most with the high pressure on the spindle glands, might just need a bit more running in. I like the TOPS number 98818 chalked on the smokebox door and cabside, I wonder if WCRC are thinking of turning it out that way... ;)

And I thought the problem with these inferior machines was the lack of (or inadequate?) valve spindle guides, but what would I know - I've never restored one (although I did have a discussion with a fitter friend who was not overly keen on that particular design failing).

Perhaps something to do with outside admission valves

Part of the problem is indeed the outside admission, but also the lack guidance leads to uneven forces and wear on the gland, how that lack of support effects a new restoration I can't comment.

It only seems like a few years ago when I last saw 35018 at Ropley and now it's running on the main line. Looking forward to seeing 34016 in steam again.

Saves having to get spindle guides trued up to the steam chest bore and replaces them with a couple of extra pin joints for the hanger arrangement .... you pays your money and takes your choice. I believe that hanger arrangement can also be used to positively influence the equality of valve events with Walschaerts gear. With 35028 and 34046 (the most videoed pair in recent times) you tend to see a little play of steam at the extension spindle glands up front as the valves reverse and the same, if not less at the rear - if the spindle guidance was inadequate I'd expect the rear gland to suffer disproportionately.

It is the rear gland that I'm discussing (and appears to be this one blowing on the clip of BIL?). You do indeed pays your money, and it's noticeable that a number of Walschaerts valve gear locos even with inside admission do also have the provision of guidance - I suppose why it was omitted it was down to restricting costs during the rebuild although I suppose having sufficient space may have played a part??

PS - the same blow is also apparent on the clips of the 35028 test run today (clip on Facebook)
