On the 1905 map it looks like the line crossed Station Road on an overbridge.

Why did they leave the rail in road? Surely worth scrap.

    Maybe, but;

They are also vinyl letters, in the wrong font, spacing, and have no punctuation.

This was Stalbridge shortly before closure clearly showing a level crossing, but there may previously have been a bridge - not sure. Not my photo but taken from a book which I set out to recreate last year, albeit 50 years on, so giving a before and after comparison. Robin's car would be to the right of the crossing here. hiding somewhere behind the signal box.

Fair comment but I could only see them as I passed by. Perhaps you might offer to do them in the authentic way?

It is more than likely that the scrap value of the rail is far less than the cost of digging up the road, removing the track then reinstating the road afterwards.

True. The scrap value wouldn't cover the cost of the temporary traffic control!

On the Honeybourne = Stratford line the rails are still in situ at Long Marsden. For many years the tram tracks in London were simply tarmacked over and some may still be in situ. Closed 1953

I think this was very common.

Many old tram lines were exposed relatively recently in Derby when streets in the city centre were pedestrianised and the surface dug up to lay pavers.

The Tewkesbury Quay branch had a large section of rail still intact under the tarmac until it was resurfaced a few years ago.

    WSR Classic Car Run

86 vehicles made it to the 'off'.

In view of yesterday's events in London, the participants observed a minute's silence before the 'start'.

Can anyone say when the last movement over the siding that is still in place at Stalbridge was?

    Robin (somewhat ungrammatically!)

This reference suggests the station closed to goods traffic in April 1965 and the goods sidings - including the one over the road - stopped being used at the same time.

Doesn't actually answer the question of the last movement though :-/

My good lady and I did our first Quantock Belle diner today. From being shown to our seats upon arrival, to leaving at the end of the extended afternoon, we were looked after brilliantly and fed (and 'watered') gloriously well.....our sincere thanks to all who made it happen.

Well, if there was a bridge and it was converted to a level crossing because it had limited headroom, that would account for the hump in the road mentioned previously.

  20. Thank you for your kind words. I will circulate this post to the QB crew members who were on duty today.
