We are delighted to see a good interest in our plan to return Defiant to the main line. We would encourage people who may be considering becoming a trustee shareholder to chat with us about it. The opportunity here is to participate in what we do and be on the inside track. This is rarely, if ever, offered with fundraising schemes and is perhaps the true value of becoming a trustee. By becoming involved with the locomotive in this way, you will come to understand how we work in repairing and running our heritage trains on the main line and, if you wish and gain relevant competencies, you can participate. If we are to plan for a sustainable future, we need more people to get involved who have something to offer. We expect there to be plenty of trains for Defiant to haul once she has been repaired…We are planning an open meeting at Tyseley on 18th March 2017 which you might consider coming to so you can find out more; details will be announced nearer the time when finalised.

For more information on how to become involved with Defiant, please visit www.vintagetrains.co.uk/defiant or email: defiant@vintagetrains.co.uk

Notice now Defiant is home at Tyseley in the company of 5043 and 7029. No idea how long shes been away from home but certainly well over a decade. Look forward to seeing the next chapter in the life of 84E's third Castle :)

Anything that sees a pre-nationalisation loco back in action in pre-nationalisation livery is a good thing in my book. Now, if Tyseley could just take that awful double chimney off 5043 at its next overhaul, then we could have her back in action in a proper Great Western livery too.... :)

The double chimney is not awful and improves performance on the Castles. As evidence shows that the double chimney on Clun Castle made her a better engine and was one of the reasons that Clun Castle was preserved in the first place. All liverys that locomotives wear during service are all proper liverys and BR green come from the GWR green. Their will not remove the double chimney off 5043 at its next overhaul and all locomotives. That have double chimneys have become better engines and the double chimney makes a good sound.

I think that the obvious answer to anyone who dislikes the double chimney and BR livery on 5043 is that Vintage Trains would be very happy to receive your contributions towards hastening the return to steam of single-chimney GWR-liveried Defiant!

I'm happy with 5043 the way it is. It is one of the few locos out there where the performances speak for themselves and Tyseley has a great track record. That said I'm very much looking forward to the days when 5080 and 7029 get their turn in their respective schemes. Cheers and may VT maintain their high standards of excellence. That is the key.

What is the point of removing the double chimney? Just restore Defiant. Then you have the best of both worlds.

    Nowt so queer as folk.

None of you noticed the :) in my posting then! I don't like BR liveries, and I don't care for double chimneys, but I was joking about removing them...

I'd love to become a member, but to go and spend £1000 and only be entitled to a single ticket once running won't win favours. If only it were a pair of tickets, then I might stand a chance with the offer of 2x day trips out at the end of it.
