The Midland compounds were world class locomotives.
In 1926 a Diamond proposed a small modification that could have made them Chapelon beaters.
A new build can be a money-earning heritage locomotive.
Inside the present loading gauge with up to outside 22 inch cylinder.
    Very economical and very gracefull.
My proposal is to have one 20 inch high pressure cylinder on left outboard side,
a 30 inch low pressure between frames and make starboard side look like the 999 locomotive.
Superheating between HP and LP and around 6 feet wheels if it can be done without looking to od.
    I take Paypal

That's nice. Anything like plans to persuade me to have a word with my bank manager?

    The first choise is free.
We will have to make the 3D model ourselves.
Shall we use Onshape or Fusion 360?

You can use whatever technology you like. I'll only consider spending money if I have a reasonable idea of what I'm contributing to - and bear in mind that I'm not a Midland man.

Powerwise it will be half a SNCF 4-8-0 with better boiler proportions.

Sorry, as I thought my previous posts made clear, I'm not interested enough in the concept to take those responsibilities on; I have plenty of other responsibilities to attend to first.

To be blunt, if someone comes on here proposing a project, I'm interested not just in the idea, but seeing an understanding of what it would take to turn an interesting idea into reality. This idea doesn't meet that test so I'm out.

Hermod, do you have any practical experience in steam locomotive operation and maintenance. Without trying to offend, it seems to me that almost every one of your posts contradicts the thoughts and ideas of those of us who have such experience.

I'm not suggesting that this is the best new build but it is at least a proven design and, according to the latest news, is coming on well. See link:http://www.6880.co.uk/news/

  14. I was thinking that it sounds like the perfect solution for the South Bedfordshire Railway, Meon Valley, fully reopened S&D, Folkestone Harbour branch, etc etc.

Please send used fivers in a plain envelope to A. Roberts, Dunstable. Unwelcome intrusions of reality will be ignored.

I am struggling to understand the suggestion being made. Am I right in thinking a 2 cyl compound with one outside cylinder on one side and the other cylinder between the frames? It would upset the weight distribution, surely, as well as looking stupid.

Have you considered building a 1 :11.3 scale, 5" gauge version to test the theory/practicality? There are a number of designs in the model engineering scene that could be adapted.

But most charter trains in future will follow a circular route and so an asymmetrical locomotive makes perfect sense.... ?

With his experience in designing a loco with one inside and one outside cylinder I assume he has also asked the NRM to gift Ellerman Lines to him.

Don't discourage him, this thread is more entertaining than some of the others!
2 cylinder compounds are fairly common on traction engines, and there is "Aerolite" in the NRM.
Porta also had a proposal for three cylinder triple expansion locomotive.
