Cant see anybody giving money to this as it will probably be the wrong colour.

But as each side has a different identity surely it will be two different colours. As it is most likely to topple onto the high pressure side I suppose that side could be black then the other side red.

Just a thought...... If the side with the outside cylinder was given smaller diameter wheels it could be painted S&DJR blue.

Surely the smaller wheels would need to be on the other side...

The NER had some 2 cylinder compounds but they were inside cylinder

If You can se both sides of a moving steam locomotive simultaneously , locomotive is not the most stupid looking.
The mass difference depends on valve arrangement and a bit of feed water heating will work wonders.

Being rebuilt as a two inside cylinder compound it will beat every english locomotive up to 100 miles an hour.
Will be fun and it will not cost UK taxpayers anything to get my famous and unwavering leadership.

One of the LSWR Adams outside cylinder 4-4-0s was experimentally rebuilt as a two cylinder compound (would have been round about the time of the NER Wordsell- Von Borries designs) but didn't lead to series production. There's a photo in Bradley I think.

I have the book but LSWR loading gauge was wider then as today.(I think)

I struggle to understand how anyone could take this seriously, but it could be interesting as an exercise in armchair engineering. To compensate for the imbalance of one outside cylinder and one inside, you could offset the boiler slightly, as in a Shay but to a much smaller extent. Maybe keep the firebox end symmetrical and offset the smokebox end. Then you also have to work out the balancing of the unusual reciprocating masses.

LBSC ('Curly' Lawrence) designed Maid of Kent in 5" gauge as both inside cylindered (as full size) and outside cylindered (Resembling a Midland Compound) There's probably loads of unfinshed 'abandoned' models available.

I understand very well that grown up men seriously build a new edition of locomotives that was rail disturbing and selfdestructing more than seventyfive years ago.
But it was the show off wishing of newly appointed CMEs that gave England fourcylinder pacifics that was not very economic and three cylinder ditto that shed lubrication oil everywhere until waiting for the fire brigade. In wartime
I am just playing CME doing stupid designs.
Thanks to modern 3D programes balancing is no issue.
If You know how much speed and hammerblow will be allowed it can be calculated very easily.
The Nord thing here ran 120 kmh eassily and everyday

    OK
Single throw cranks often doing ugly things in 1935 would be considered bad engineering many other places in the world.

But obviously not in Germany* where some very successful three cylinder locos were built.

    *Other countries are available.
