Yes. The original Dart Valley had five - 1369, 1638, 6412/30/35. When the decision was made to concentrate on the Paignton line, 1638 ended up on the Kent & East Sussex, 6412 moved to the West Somerset, 6430 (only originally bought for spares as the frames were bent) was sold to a private individual who has restored it and based it at Llangollen and 1369 stayed at Buckfastleigh. 6435 did indeed move to Paignton although I don't know how much it was used. I don't ever recall seeing it in use when I visited the line. It is now based at Bodmin while 6412 has returned to Buckfastleigh

    John, thanks for the information.

I'm wondering whether the pannier will be used on their service trains?

It will be used as cover for our main running fleet throughout the rest of the summer timetable. Expect to see it pottering about on Tuesday for testing.

Its 1st rostered turns are over our 4th annual beer festival this July. It will then Be spare, with all being well the rest of its 'bought' days being used the end of august/early September.

We're very grateful to our close friends at Tyseley Loco works for allowing us to borrow one of their fine machines.

The line must be very well thought of as Tyseley locomotives are rarely loaned out

Awesome. Assuming work doesn't put a spanner in the works, I shall be visiting on the Saturday of the beer festival.

It runs in my mind that I had a trip over the line behind a Pannier with a normal 7 coach train several years ago. I've no idea what sort of Pannier as they all look alike. Am I right or have I dream-pt it?

6435 was based at PDR before having an easier life at Bodmin.

Wiki says 6435 regularly hauled 7 coach trains on the line so it must be true. :)

Still planning on visiting the railway in July, but wondering what the chances of a steam ban are down there on the preserved railway as well?

  18. /Is there a chance of a pannier pottering around tomorrow ?

It's very unlikely, as far as i'm aware, we've never had a steam ban before and we work very closely with the fire brigade to ensure continuity of our services. Last year we overhauled an 8000 gallon tanker and brake-van, in turn creating a "fire-train". It's stationed at Churston for quick deployment anywhere on the railway in event of a fire. It's also used to dampen down high risk areas of the line, such as longwood or the coastal path from Goodrington. These are the 2 main areas we are likely to have problems. The P-W gang also work tirelessly in the summer to ensure all the cesses and lineside are as clear as possible. We endeavour to minimise heavy loadings for certain engines and ensuring all the loco's spark arrestors & ash-pan spray systems remain operable. Obviously though, you can never say never!

As for the Pannier tank, it will be out & about tomorrow lunchtime, before heading to Paignton to double head the 14:15 service train to Kingswear & return with 75014 Braveheart. Both loco's will be smokebox to Paignton.

If there was a steam ban, the P&D would be in a mess, okay the 25 could do the one rake but what about the second? 03/04/08 thrash all day long!
