And fired by me - sorry about the awful clag when my mate shut off - must have been admiring the late afternoon scenery and not paying attention! It was a memorable trip.

Is the climb out of Brid to Sewerby more of a challenge?

It would be very interesting to get a view on this from anyone who has first-hand experience of both northbound and southbound climbs. On paper the northbound climb from a standing start through Sewerby, Flamborough and Bempton looks considerably more fearsome - starting with a half mile at 1 in 129 almost immediately after leaving Bridlington station, then 5 solid miles of 1 in 92 to a summit around 36m 40c (from Hull).

Southbound, the ascent is longer - roughly 7.5 miles - but more broken and somewhat less steep. But it does still include two separate sections, both/each just under two miles long, at 1 in 106 through Hunmanby and then continued at 1 in 112 after a very brief downhill section. I don't think the comparison is that simple, though, because a southbound service would need to slow from a ruling line speed of 60/55 mph to negotiate a 20 mph restriction at the points accessing the single line section just south of Hunmanby station. So two lots of effort required in the southbound direction compared with one very big one northbound.

This is why I think an informed view would be interesting.

I may be wrong, subject to brain fade, but I think the 2012 trip had to tackle the hill from a standing start at Hunmanby.

Edit-- correct. The thread is on p108 below. See another excellent vid from Alberta 45562 there. Off the platform I think it's 1 in 80. Not sure that train would have quite met NR's load limits! Was it Gordon Hodgson driving?

I know that there have been times when Ballast trains have struggled getting up the bank from Brid to Flamborough.
Remember one taking a couple of hours to get to site, we could hear it trying to get up the bank but I think what it did best was to wake up the neighbours between Brid Quay crossing and Sewerby.

In 2012, there was also an April trip northbound that was a standing start from Hunmanby with 70013 and 12 on. Noisy but no problem.

Seemed to be plenty of assistance from the back on Miles Platting this morning unfortunately, however diesel unattached at Phillips Park Jnc and Leander accelerated away from the Romiley stop in fine form :)

    A Thingy...
I remember that trip fondly. It was my very first time out of KGX by rail, clocked my highest speed near Huntingdon, and remains the one and only time I have done the Wolds route. However, I recall there was a delay at Peterborough and an evening possession on the ECML, so we ended up having a diesel all the way back from Scarborough. Just heard 45690 from my flat in York as I type this. Seems to be going well.

Once upon a time in the peak !

Enticed out to Edale this morning by rumours of sunshine and the hope that at 8:20 it might still be cool enough for exhaust !It wasn't !

Nice photo but there would have been unlikely to have been any exhaust there anyway as it is 1 in 100 downhill there.

Thanks Matt, I appreciate the gradient there, had it been cool still I would have been west of the tunnel but decided on Edale to get a shot by the box.

I had similar thoughts, but checked the satellite and the temperature forecast when I got up and decided not to bother. Nice shot with the box and semaphore, though, Scott.
