As this debate goes round and round all or most of you that post on here must remember that you are not the general public, and only a very small proportion of West Coast passengers. Each week during this time of the year WCR trains will carry upward of 1,200 passengers and few if any will be concerned about the livery, they want a special train trip and a steam engine on the front for part of that trip, and that's what they get. Did we get any moans when it turned out to be an 8F, no, it made all the right noises and smells. Did we get any complaints when it was Galatea, no, again because it ticked the boxes of what a steam engine means to them.
If you don't like what you see then that's your prerogative, Mr Smith I'm sure is more likely to be influenced by those 1,200+ passengers than a few complainers on a specialist forum.

I knew a chap who did that with his Ford Escort. Nothing to do with authenticity, he just had so many accidents he liked to hear witnesses contradicting each other...

(Sorry, way off topic but couldn't resist)

Unfortunately this is where I have to disagree (and my apologies, I've not picked you out on purpose, it's just the first negative response to the debate). I totally respect everyones view of the livery debate, both sides, and that includes WCR and David Smith's, but the last handful of posts on this thread are completely worthwhile and are in my opinion, the right place (a discussion forum) for people to get across their valid points for others to debate. They also hit the nail on the head on my stance of BIL.

Yes, going on about it constantly is going round in circles, but the majority of the last few posts don't fall into that category as they're setting out good points. Some people might not like that, but to shoot people down on their opinion is just not acceptable from where I'm standing.

Who remembers the Rolls Royce cars of Keith Moon and John Lennon ?? Rolls Royce took a very dim view of those. And then more recently Mario Balloteli bought a new Bentley and had it painted in finest British Army camouflage.

Could you explain how painting a loco black over red or green would help his business? Joe public like colourful liveries, such as Galatea, so I can see the argument from that side. From where I'm standing, you're simply agreeing that he is painting BIL to antagonise people who actually care what it looks like.

Cussedness is a vastly overrated trait, especially in business. There again the railway operations are not businesses in the ordinary sense of being established for profit making purposes but facilities for allowable capital investment?

Now where did I say that ? or even suggest it. I've no idea what Mr Smith thinks. IMO he's a successful business man, and we, as railway enthusiasts would be a lot poorer without his vision and his money. Would we have BIL fresh out of the workshops after being rescued from oblivion?

Fair point. Merely trying to understand why some folk don't care what a loco looks like. But I notice you didn't answer my question?

    He did. @Victor said,

"I've no idea what Mr Smith thinks."

If it really bugs you that much, there is no point asking that question here.

The simple answer is I've no idea what will or will not affect David Smiths business (WCRC)

It appears to me that the only people who are wound up about Mr Smiths cussedness are members here.
The travelling members of the public that I speak to every week, are not bothered about what's right or wrong when it comes to livery, it just not interest or matter to them, if I said that today's engine should really have the tender cycling lion facing the other way, the response would no doubt be a glazed look and rapid change of subject.

So it's not really the people that care about correct livery that make these threads go round in circles after all :Cigar:

Perspective, please. If we're really all about the duty to history, then it's remarkable how little the inauthenticity of some of the (admittedly new) tenders attached to Bulleid locomotives attract comment. From Class 40 wheels to extended bunkers, it's all there. But no complaints. The addition of inauthentic Westinghouse air pumps to mainline locomotives is also forgiven on grounds of practicality. But paint it the wrong colour, then all hell breaks loose, and linesiders predict financial ruin for the perpetrator.

It's been mentioned in several previous posts, but it may well be a bit of a joke at the expense of those who get exercised about such things; the foregoing posts are not debate, but are simply well-written exegeses in complaint. The paint job might even be a reaction against magazines and persons who have been perceived to have given grief in the past, but at the end of the day, so what?

I have my preferences for historic liveries, but can put that aside where I see a benefit, in this case seeing something that might otherwise be languishing on the Isle of Portland being run-in, and could feasibly provide those unable to do 35028's tours with another option in another part of the country.

That would depend on where the most money could be earned by the loco.
Supply will go where the demand is. It would not depend on geography.

If it ends up getting used exclusively on the regular runs already organised by WCRC, which are clearly in another part of the country to 35028s regular haunts, then I don't see the point you are making?

Maybe I should have caveated that 'for those wishing to specifically ride behind an MN, but can't get to the south, they have another option'.

Sounds like it will be an almost direct replacement to 46115, at least for the remainder of this Summer.
