Paul, here's what I don't understand about your WIBN obsession.

You seem to think anyone suggesting something would be nice is expecting all those in earshot to leap into action and engage in hard work and expense against their better judgement. But aren't heritage railway supporters and volunteers... well, volunteers? It's only those who agree with the suggestion that are going to be contributing any time and money.

We have an A1 pacific on the main line today because someone suggested 'Wouldn't it be nice?', and thousands replied, 'Yes it would'. Who forced them?

A little more signwriting at Stogumber today.

    1. At the request of the station 'CAFE' has been changed to 'BUFFET'.

    2. A hanging board provided which when put in place hides up 'CREAM TEAS' and says 'BACON ROLLS instead on one side.....

    3. .....and on the other is in blackboard paint to deal with any (ahem!) unanticipated eventualities.

Well the A1 Locomotive Trust shows a high degree of business awareness which has not always gone down well amongst the fraternity.

The sort of thing I have in mind (as an example) is a locomotive which is restored under contract at a fair expense. All goes well and it makes its debut. This is the signal for a burst of W.I.B.N. suggesting it goes on an immediate circular tour of tourist railways around the country to produce photo opportunities. The owning line, who have forked out for the restoration, would just have to wait to see some return.

The machine concerned may well go "on its travels" at some time but questions of expense and work involved do not concern those inflicted with W.I.B.N.

Reading between the lines, I'm guessing that you're thinking of 41313. Bit of a different situation tbh as most railways don't have the sea in between them and the rest. I can understand the reasoning in that situation for such a suggestion.

So if the A1SLT both 1) suggested something nice, and 2) showed 'a high degree of business awareness', these two things aren't mutually exclusive. Asking 'Wouldn't it be nice?' isn't necessarily a bad thing to do. Might in fact be profoundly beneficial?

No problem with your posting. This is is still an example of W.I.B.N. though.

Yes I get that, but maybe one with logic than just nice was the point I was making.

I don't see any squab on the menu. Or did the pigeon make a recovery?

Squab is an immature pigeon kept in the nest by being tethered. Cruel, and illegal these days.:D

    No harm done! :)

Interestingly, squab pie, (which I believe is a traditional West Country dish, and thus has more right to be listed on the WSR menu board than the afore posted 'ostrich burgers'!), has no pigeon in it at all. It does however, contain mutton or lamb, which from recent thread updates the WSR would have little or no trouble rustling up! :D

It is a traditional West Country dish. I think the reason for the name dates back to when many big houses had dovecotes that provided a source of fresh meat to the upper classes in winter. Pigeon was an expensive meat not available to the peasantry. AFAIK young pegeons were tethered in the nest to contiune growing and being fed by the parents. Much easier to do in a dovecote than up random trees!
