Finally solved the question of why the owner wants it black. Mainly due to it not being an LMS origin so it is not held in the same regard as others which have Nostalgia value. The MN is not a true love just a necessary workhorse.

To be fair. Every engine has their off day and part of the banter of this hobby is the teasing that goes with the choice of what your favourite engine is.

Mine all climb hills, just not quickly...

I seem to recall it also set the Chilterns alight in April 2013, so maybe I'm being a little too hard on it.

7714, for such a little engine it's taken Mr Churchill's words about 'setting Europe alight' to heart quite literally, well parts of Worcstershire and Shropshire anyhow!

Must be the only labour saving device the GW ever provided on one of their locos, then.

Didn't a light pacific perform rather spectacularly on the 1948 locomotive exchanges- producing some excellent evidence of their hill climbing ability?

On this particular example, (and I'm not having a go!), it may be tempered by the fact(?) that surely it was being driven by a hand picked driver of utmost talent and experience - something that is quite possibly unable to be replicated in umpteen YouTube videos of wheel slipping locos.

Not that I am in any way casting nasturtiums on the ability or dedication of today's drivers or indeed the performance characteristics of any class of loco. It must be very easy to find any number of slipping loco videos or anecdotal evidence and draw preferred conclusions without overly paying mind to several principles of physics that must come into play in each scenario. Furthermore, a steam locomotive is more than just metal, it also has a human element - a top link driver of yesteryear who plied his trade day in and day out v's the very best of today, may well be akin to an excellent amateur tennis player trying to match it with Rodger Federer.

Extremely powerful locomotives fighting gradients, greasy conditions, overloaded trains, different drivers, etc, etc...how can you say one is better or worse than the other unless you back the train up, switch locos and try again under the same conditions? Even then you might run into the conundrum that you are just asking a loco to do something that it was never designed to do.

    :)

Driving a Bulleid pacific in original form requires skill . Ray Churchill and Pete Roberts are two who perfected the art. They are superb powerful and free running engines and I had many good runs behind them in the days of steam plus over 3,000 miles behind Tangmere in it's preservation days. But all engines and drivers have their off days and I was on the trip when Tangmere failed to restart it's train from Ore after being stopped there with most of the train on the steep gradient in the tunnel And that was Pete Roberts
