I'm not a diesel fan but a little research suggests the loco on the final Bournemouth Belle was D1924 which like many of the class underwent various changes of identity and ended up as 47810. I believe this was in service with DRS until fairly recently and may still be around somewhere.

Out of interest, was a run round and tender first haulage back to Southampton a possibility (with another run round at the GL)? Thanks.

All alternative options were looked at, including this one. Apart from being rather 'naff' there would have been the problem of pathing the train at 35 mph (you can haul with a loco on the rear at much higher speed). Also, IIRC it isn't a signalled move to run round at Southampton UGL. Add in the fact that it would also meant higher coal and water consumption (thus higher overall cost of the operation) then diesel haulage became the obvious answer.

UK Steam has it as operated by VSOE rather than BLMD - is this a slip or there still two operators with access to the rake?

Actually, a mistake on two levels regarding 'terminology'. What is shown in brackets under the train name on UK Steam is not the operator, but the ownership of the set being used. So yes, this should say BLMD not VSOE. The operator is DBC, the promoter is UK Railtours.

Is that right? my reading of UK steam is that the first entry in brackets refers to the coaching stock, the second to the TOC and the right hand column to the marketing company. In this case it says VSOE ; dbc ; ukrt. In the coaching stock list, the Pullman set (Minerva, Perseus etc) is listed under VSOE. Maybe this should now be BLMD? But in other cases the coaching stock is listed as eh01 rather than Riviera Trains which I think is helpful since it shows which rake is intended to be used where that is known.

Looking forward to the videos on Wednesday!

That's what I said; the first entry in brackets does refer to coaching stock (or "ownership of the set" to use my words). Sometimes it shows the actual set number too, such as eh01 as you say. Certainly VSOE should not now be used; the British Pullman set is owned by Belmond. Then comes the operator (TOC) and the r/h column the marketing company (promoter).

I can confirm that run round moves are not permitted in Southampton UGL for passenger services. Reverse Moves (RM in timings) are OK as authorised by local instructions. RR of freight services is permitted, but needs a gap between SWT, GTR Southern or XC stabling units there and a vacant platform in Southampton station for the second reversal of the loco.

    Cheers, Neil
