Not quite true probably a few will know at WC, but are quite at liberty to keep it to themselves and if they looked at this thread are not likely to change that view with all the paint froth moaning minis on here. Give it a rest people, anything you say on here is not going to change anything.

Not really sure how forum discussion, no matter how lengthy, demonstrates obsession. It's just an outlet for idle thoughts, or at least that's how I see things.

IIRC the face appeared on the front of 48151 on a Carnforth - Barrow run many years ago.

David Smith must be laughing his cap off at this thread.

He restores, at his own cost, a loco, that mainline steam is desperate for, he paints it black, and the frother's are up in arms.

He paid for the restoration, or WCRC did, he has resurrected another wreck for the mainline.

If he wants to paint it pink, with Starskey and Hutch white stripe, so what, we have no input on his decision.

The ones up in arms, will be at lineside, contributing and sharing photos , but putting no real £££'s in his pocket.

I very much doubt those on board, care about the colour of the loco, it may be incorrect, but as long as it goes chuff, creates lots of smoke, they will enjoy the day out.

Steam is run on the mainline for Mr & Mrs Normal, enthusiasts are a minority on most of his excursions, he does not care, get over it.....

If topics of discussion were confined only to those where "change" could be acheived NP would be a very quiet forum indeed.

That is quite true and whilst I think the strength of feeling that is interpreted from the comments in this thread is somewhat over exaggerated, there is obvious disappointment that somebody in a position to please only himself chooses to do exactly that rather than complete the project in a way that would be universally admirable. In the scheme of things it's neither here nor there but then that is where the frustration, such as it is, lies.

We cant have that. I think theres a plan to get it to 100 pages before the engine is accepted into traffic, purely based on the constant issues for livery froth, authenticity, WCRC engine ownership, company structure and not to forget, the excellent advice on operations from DRAT - the Discerning Railway Armchair Trustees. Should have Mr Smith reaching for the bottle...

Might coin that phrase myself from now on...

And the fact that the Dalesman trips ex York on both Monday and yesterday were very well patronised, about 380 passengers Monday and 485 yesterday, despite 'only' having a goods engine on the front, but it did all the steam engine things that the passengers expect, made all the right noises, the right smells and did the job with no fuss. Did anyone complain, no, will they complain when a black Bulleid appears on the front, no of course not.
Lets face it Mr Smith has got it right and the NP experts and members of DRAT  have got it wrong.

By your own analysis it cannot be a business decision as you say the colour has no economic value so the comment is rather fatuous.
It obviously gives you and others some peverse delight to think of Mr Smith laughing at his own joke. Sad :-(
How much nicer would it be to be proudly boasting about a meticulous restoration to BR workshop condition rather than the private self satisfaction generating some fleeting disapproval of some folk you care not for? Still, guess you have to get your kicks any way you can.

To be fair, gricers were enjoying runs behind 48151 long before Dalesman style trips were even thought of, even though it was still "only" a goods engine back then.

Hang on... you might want to explain yourself. First you say that alienating will have a cost on WCRCs custom if enthusiasts are alienated - presumably your suggesting something similar to a boycott.
Then you admit that the colour of the engine has no economic value as the massive majority of passengers won't notice or mind that the engine is painted in a different colour to the traditional BR Brunswick Green - presumably suggesting that the ratio of enthusiasts to travelling general public is low enough for the cost not to be felt by WCRC, and even less so for those that do mind what colour the engine is.

    So which is it?

In the end it is yet again, yet another post that bemoans the colour because it is not going back to a guise when it ran in British Railways. Personally, I think WCRC will be very proud with the restoration of the engine and the fact that it might be Black might just highlight their pride and satisfaction all the more by deliberately making it different as its now 2017 and its meant to be a regular mainline running engine that works its trade and earns money for the company. I have said before WCRC are not looking back, they acknowledge the past but are quite happy and proud to be seen to be doing charting their own course now.

Maybe we can have a little badge, transfer or plaque attached to the engine. Something discreetly placed on the engine near the builders plate/ corner of cabside / under the nameplate.

    "DRAT Approved Engine"

Like a "registered by Resco Railways" plaque? Usually that tends to be on the tender between the footsteps and first wheel ;):p

You have hit the nail on the head. As a good old fashioned Yorkist he will live by the maxim "tha don't do owt for nowt unless tha does it for thisen."

Linesiders don't add value to him. They don't contribute to the return on his investment. They are not his customers so he doesn't care
