That its had a black gloss coat does not necessary mean its staying black, sometimes you apply a 50/50 mix to ensure you have a good surface, or a gloss coat, to test the finish and black will show the slightest defect, the cab side numbers do not look permanent, and black can be used as a base coat for Dark Green, in fact a gloss coat that looks good will be easier to flatten off as there should be almost no high points, and its how good your base coat is that counts when painting a loco.

So more froth and lather and what have we actually learnt.....

That WCRC have rightly spent the last few weeks fettling and not worrying about the protective coating.

Her first time at speed on the mainline for c. 53 years but on this thread very few seem interested in that achievement.

I'm interested, I think it's great that we have such a machine oop north, I'm looking forward to a ride behind it over the S&C. I've seen Tangmere, but I've never seen one of these machines in action. Get it tweeked and fettled Mr Smith and let's be having it

    P.S. Any colour you choose.;)

Maybe it's a case of "it goes without saying" and the photos and videos posted say it all for us? Great to see her making the final step to her maiden public run.

I have a feeling that professional rivalry will win out in the end. Clan Line has been setting the pace since it's return to service and chest thumping (totally appropriate) has been the game from the South. If Clan Line is supposed to set the bar, and the work was done down the line in Crewe, I can see Carnforth wanting to at least match, if not better the outcome. And which is the bigger achievement? Taking a rusting hulk and bringing it back to life?

In the end doesnt everyone win? there will be chances for people to travel behind an MN that otherwise may not, Clan line flys the flag down South, and if British India Line is going to spend much of its early reincarnation up north, then its a market not being tapped, Clan line as always will be looked after and not over worked, and that in turn opens up the chance of some S&C with 35018 runs starting from the smoke changing to steam at Preston , so offering a day out, until such time that 46115 returns , then BIL could head down South.

You can't compare the two. BIL has Been rebuilt from scrap condition and is owned by a commercial railway company. Clan Line is owned by a dedicated bunch of enthusiasts with a lot of expertise in their number and has a lot of TLC over its boiler cycle which an everyday workhorse won't. As far as coming down south is concerned I'm not bothered we have a MN looking like a MN should look so let the other one continue to please the northerners

The classic NatPres dilemma: how to distinguish between opinions that go without saying and opinions that need to be repeated ad infinitum. Apparently impossible...

Are you saying that the support team at Carnforth don't take care over boiler cycles?

It's really great to see BIL out and about again. Well done to all at Carnforth. These test runs are so important in helping to deal with any 'snagging' issues on the loco. For instance it seems that lubrication of the front end and a bit of gland action still needs to bed down. And none of that is at all surprising given the major work on her. I wouldn't be at all bothered if 10A takes its time before letting her loose on something that involves a high mileage.

Quite so and makes it even more amazing what 35028 achieved on Wednesday almost fresh out of the box.
Looking forward to getting haulage behind my third MN in due course.

Indeed it is. When you see the Barry pics you have to admire the vision and outcome.

Safe to say BIL will probably not be let out on her own for a while until she's run in. I'll wait a while before booking.

No I'm Not saying that, Carnforth have produced some very reliable engines but it can't get the same TLC as a loco with a dedicated working membership.

The only thing Carnforth lacks is a decent length running line of its own which would be handy for snagging. There must be potentially huge mutual benefit in setting something up with ELR for example.
