    A question which was raised at Ropley today;
    why not use an Eastleigh built loco restored with Heritage Lottery Funding?
    It's sat at Ropley, namely 850 Lord Nelson ....

    The link to 1967 is a bit stretched, I understand 34007 was withdrawn in 1964....

    Oh well, never get the facts get in the way of a bit of publicity!

    Cheers, Neil

    Withdrawn October 1965, from Salisbury shed.

    Funnily enough, I worked out that of the 13 different locos used to mark 50 years since the end of Southern steam at the Swanage, Mid-Hants and Bluebell railways plus the main line, only 41312 and 35028 were still active in 1967. 41298 on the IoWSR is the only other currently active survivor of 1967.

    I guess the reason for using Wadebridge rather than Lord Nelson is that it will be re-numbered as 34019, which did last until 1967 and indeed, two original spam cans lasted right to the end of Southern steam whereas all the Nelsons had gone by 1962. You have a fair point about an Eastleigh-built engine being more appropriate. 34007 was not only built at Brighton rather than Eastleigh but never shedded at Eastleigh either.

    Thanks for the correction for the date of withdrawal for 34007.

    To be honest, 34007/34019 is so coated with grey weathering, the identity is completely obscured. Another thought, weathering like that won't give a good impression of railway preservation to the unsuspecting public on Saturday morning.....

    Cheers, Neil

    Could be interesting with the weather forecast for Tuesday - steady light rain for most of the day.

    Cheers, Neil

    Anyway, thanks from ERPS to all who made the event an outstanding success.
    The lead time for exhibitors was a bit short compared to other events, but the the overall result was good.
    It improved the public awareness of all the groups there and revived many memories for the older residents of the town.

    Leigh Road will look a bit empty next weekend!

    Cheers, Neil
