I've studied my notes for the weekend of the 40th Anniversary of the End of Southern Steam.

    Saturday, 7th July, 2007.
The Mid-Hants Gala hosted three Bulleids on service trains in filthy mid 1960s condition :
34007 Wadebridge, 34016 Bodmin and 35005 (as 35008 Orient Line).
73096 ran as 73029 and 41312 hauled a goods train and a two coach local.
Fresh from overhaul interloper 60019 Bittern hauled a service train for the first time in 35 years.

Also on the 7th July, 34067 Tangmere hauled the Southern Phoenix railtour in glorious light from Waterloo to Winchester, Eastleigh, Fareham, Havant, Petersfield and Waterloo.

On Sunday, 8th July, 850 Lord Nelson hauled the Southern Sunset railtour from Waterloo to Salisbury, Exeter, Bristol, Westbury, Salisbury and Waterloo. Unfortunately the loco suffered from bad coal during the tour and then failed at Westbury with a collapsed brick arch. I remember seeing the train near Bath and thought it sounded terrible.
The loco was replaced by diesel traction.

Let's hope that this weekend will be remembered as very enjoyable and successful. <BJ>

Clan Line was also out on the 8th with a train to Poole I think.
I saw both 850 and 35028 pass nine Elms junction within half an hour of each other.

18L through Wimbledon West Jn crossing over from the down slow to the down fast. Shame about the earlier incident as we were bowled out by cloud, full sun when it was due. Sounded epic accelerating away once it had crossed over onto the down fast though!

Nothing was cut up at Nine Elms at the end of steam. The rods must have been removed from a withdrawn loco. Also, that is not 34018. It was at Guildford and left tender first for Woking, with vans loaded with shed equipment. (I wonder what happened to them) It left the vans at Woking and headed chimney first for Salisbury, on its last journey in steam.

I remember that Lord Nelson trip very well. There was no diesel on the train when it was failed at Westbury(although no doubt one rescued the loco and ECS much later) and everyone on the train was turfed out to wait for a heavily delayed service train from Westbury to Reading.Amazingly everyone somehow got on. Upon arrival at Reading after 2300, Steam Dreams somehow got hold of a huge fleet of taxis and got everyone home, many(myself included) needed to get back to Woking where we had joined the train. V sad that that was 850's last mainline trip, she put up some great performances on the old BR CME's in the 80's

  16. Enjoyed the show at Andover. Off to Templecombe now, then Yeovil Junction.

No QB running today, completely by coincidence of course.

I love the supreme confidence that the owners and DBC have in this loco when it is just out of the workshop. Running pure steam speaks volumes about everyone concerned and a joy to see.

Seeing is believing! This is my video of Clan Line at speed through Weybridge this morning. A real hair on the back of the neck moment. I hope you agree that the vid captures the moment well. What is more, no electric trains around to spoil things. I guess it would have been nice to have a green rake of southern liveried coaches, but you can't have it all, and this was a wonderful spectacle. Apologies about the comments at the end but I could not contain myself. It was amazing!
