I can remember travelling in a carriage in Cuba where whilst the toilet floor was intact, there was so little of the panelling around the toilet compartment remaining that you were well and truly on display to anybody passing by in the adjacent corridor!

  3. It would... but for the fact that is, sadly, an urban myth.

In theory the Coriolis effect should apply, as it does to hurricanes, etc, but in practise it doesn't because of the tiny scale of water exiting a toilet or basin. The shape of the bowl and various other factors have a far greater effect. Indeed it's possible to make the water exit a basin in whatever direction you like anywhere in the world, should you be minded to.

Just had an email notification saying that the initial report is updated by asking for witnesses prior to the event.
However, reading it, it looks just the same with Monday's date on it.

Once had a very pleasant experience on a toilet on the NYMR. it wasn't the warmest of days and a hole in the floor ( drainage) and a leaking steam heat pipe in close proximity had turned it into a steamroom....

That's the sauna carriage. You usually have to pay extra for that. If you ask nicely, the ticket inspector might give you massage too. Depends who's on duty.

Might just be a cacheing issue somewhere on the internet. It happens. Forcing a page refresh will often unblock problems.

isnt that just for 1st class ticket holders , can i pay a surcharge if i decide to take advantage of this additional service.
if you want a real Sauna, try the footplate, you get the chill down service also, and the constant up and down , side to side movement is better than any massage, you sweat buckets when going chimney first , and freeze when your coming back tender first, and if it it raining you get a power shower .

All kinds of interpretations can be put on this amendment to the RAIB notice which is why it is best not to put any interpretations on here at all much as lots of people must be itching to.

All of this talk of toilet cubicles and being able to see the track reminds me of some narrow gauge coaches in Germany where the toilet pan literally connects to a straight-down pipe. We found one such carriage on, IIRC, the Zittau line back in the late 90s. On the same trip we also noticed a bridge over a road, on which the rails were directly fixed to the bridge structure i.e. no ballast; you could see through the bridge. My travelling companion on that trip was just waiting and hoping for an open-topped car to come along... didn't happen, but over the years it must have done at some time or other!

My sense of humour is as lavatorial as anyone's but there are serious implications here and "wild surmise" helps no-one. I can think of at least three reasons for the amendment to the press release with absolutely no evidence for any of them!

    Found the updated bit now.

We would like to speak in confidence to any passengers who may have been aware that the toilet door was insecure before the incident on 22nd June, or in the days prior to the incident occurring.

So far, there seems little or no mention of a small boy who's had a very unpleasant experience, and might be put off trains for life ~ or just scared of using an unfamiliar bathroom, and I wouldn't wish that for my own child...
Possibly, the heritage sector could offer a few complimentary day trips, without fuss or fanfare, starting with something small and sturdy (2' gauge or thereabouts), building back up to 'big trains'?

Such facilities could be found on standard gauge stock in Italy as recently as 2010.
