Scotsman on the Waverley 16 July 2017

The Sundays of high summer are seeing the return of the RTC ‘s Waverley trips from York to Carlisle via Settle, hauled for the second year running by NRM flagship No 60103 Flying Scotsman. Sunday’s train was ten fully loaded coaches plus support coach, running unassisted.

I joined at Skipton in bright sunshine which lasted all day. We reached 50 by Gargrave and 54 at Bell Busk on the short run to Hellifield where we took water. Setting off briskly again, we had reached 43 after Long Preston when the brakes slammed on and we were brought to a brief halt at Settle Junction. Deprived of our run at the 1 in 100, we slogged our way up, reaching 33 by Settle, 37 at Stainforth and 38 by Helwith Bridge. The short level stretch enabled us to reach 43 before another, unexplained, slow stretch through Horton. We were through Selside at 33 but 34 was our maximum before slowing for Ribblehead. Again the climb to Blea Moor was only in the 20s, and there were no fireworks along the tops, with 48 at Garsdale and maxima of 52 at Lunds and Shotlock before Ais Gill.

We had a brisk run down Mallerstang, touching the early 60s, with further bursts of speed at Smardale and Griseburn bringing us into Appleby a minute early. We got away smartly on the last leg to Carlisle, reaching 56 by Long Marton and 63 at Culgaith. Similar speeds continued for the rest of the journey until Scotby, where we began to brake for the arrival at Carlisle, reached two minutes early.

On the return we started gently, only hitting 50 at Howe & Co's siding, and continuing in the 50s until we made it to 60 at Lazonby, then 58s at Kirkby Thore and Newbiggin before a nine minute early arrival at Appleby. Leaving two minutes late after taking water, the run down to Ormside took us to 49 before we began the long slog southward. Dropping into the thirties for a while, we were back up to 49 at Smardale and had only dropped to 37 by Kirkby Stephen. Passing Greengate and Birkett at 35, we got up to 42 on the easier stretch, and speed dropped only slowly to a minimum of 36 near Ais Gill Farm, and were up to 40 again by the summit board, passed in 10 mins 45 secs from passing Kirkby Stephen.

Downhill, we were up to 63 at Moorcock Tunnel and continued in the high 50s along the Garsdale tops before slowing for Dent. Our pace continued sedate until past Ribblehead, when we rattled down through both Horton and Settle at 63, only starting to slow at Long Preston to go into the loop at Hellifield for water. On my last leg we touched 56 at Gargrave before a two minute late arrival in Skipton where I alighted. It had been a sound performance by a magnificent locomotive through wonderful scenery on a warm summer's day - what more could one want?

This weeks Railway Herald is reporting that the 6th August Waverley is cancelled, but it's still listed on the RTC site and shown as fully booked.

They seem to have it in for RTC at the moment, also showed yesterday's DCE as cancelled since last Friday.
Mind you after the weather in Weymouth some of the passengers may have wished it had been!

The August 27th one I assume is cancelled. Still showing in UK Steam, but gone from the RTC site. 60103 is at Didcot that weekend.
