Was that not '50550' class Hunslet rather than Austerity - might have been S&L 'Gunby'? Very similar and the Austerity was an adaptation for MoD use.

+1 - and more customer friendly than yet another one in black.

The LNER bought a batch of Austerity tanks at the end of the WW2, army/military surrplus, as they were in need of replacment shunters. Hence they were given the designation J94, J being the letter for 0-6-0s of what every type tender/tank and the number the actual type/class. Equally that's why they had British Railways numbers starting 6xxxx in the Eastern/North Eastern range for former LNER classes. So they would/could be seen mainly all over the old LNER system, though not as you highlight exclusively.

    Indeed !

Looking at an old Locoshed book with ER allocations correct to April 1959 you will find class members based at Bidston, Blaydon, Colwick, Consett, Cromford (68006 / 13 / 30 / 34 ), Darlington, Doncaster, Gorton, Heaton, Hornsey, Hull, Immingham, Langwith, Stockton, Sunderland, Thornaby, Tyne Dock, West Hartlepool and York. As noted by 2392 rather well distributed throughout the old LNER system and - considered as a 4F locomotive - a powerful addition to the LNER fleet.

Quite correct, 'Gumby' is of the precursor class of 50550 from which the 18" 'Austerity' saddle tank was developed.

The more austerities painted into psuedo B.R. J94 livery the better, makes the likes of Foxfield, Pontypool & Blaenavon and other lines who celebrate the variety of the industrial livery more appealing! [tongue firmly in cheek!]

Ok, i stand corrected on 'Gunby'.
As for the LNER allocation I did read that the original 68067 was allocated to a GC shed, hence the choice of this number. Forgotten which shed though!

The genuine 68067 was, like No 7 Robert, built by Hudswell Clarke and became an NCB loco so the choice of ficticious identity does at least have some historical connection.

To Twiggs to collect Stainless 50mm bar, passed on to our machinist with the gunmetal, which had previously arrived at my office. Receptionist mystified. Leeds Bronze are very efficient. The new big end bearings had a trial fit and have been adjusted by the 8F team in their lathe; scraping in to follow. David Wright at LMS will deliver the new bunker during July and is continuing his work on the boiler.

Going back to Andrew Barclay thread, can recommend J Bown for loco tubeplates, good price, loads of formers available, quick service. Deepdale or Barnshaws for Boiler barrel or "smokebox" & Purdie dished ends for Smokebox door. Dealt personally with them all very recently.

A loco not previously mentioned on this thread but Hunslet 2387/1941 'Brookes No.1' was successfully steamed today following a three year overhaul. Just painting to finish now. Hopefully it will be running at Middleton's gala at the end of July.

Line up for Foxfield's 50th Anniversary gala over the 14th-16th July is now confirmed as Hunslet 0-6-0ST 18" Austerities 'Whiston' running as 'Dilhorne No3' and 'Wimblebury' in an unlined livery as 'NCB No7', Bagnall 0-4-0ST 'Kent Electric No2', Dubs 0-4-0CT '4101', RSH 0-4-0ST 'Eustace Forth' and Haydock Foundry 0-6-0WT 'Bellerophon' (subject to successful running in trials following crosshead repairs)

Guest engine Peckett 0-6-0ST 'Sir Gomer' courtesy of the Battlefield Line.

The Knotty Heritage Train will be operating alongside the standard service coaches and the usual coal trains on Foxfield Bank. Locos will be running in a combination of single and double heading, changing throughout the day to keep the variety.

Timetables are being drawn up as I type and will be posted in the Foxfield 50th gala thread when they are finished.

Dave, those recommendations are a big help for me actually! Starting a feasibility study on one of our Barclays. Top of the list, new boiler due to the old one being written off.

For any interested - Peckett 1555 - Ivor the Engine - has now found itself a permanent home at the Swindon and Cricklade Railway. We hope to use her for services in due course.

LMS report that the steel billet for the foundation ring has arrived; the new ring will be cut by water jet in one piece. That leaves a rather large offcut in the middle, so if anyone is looking for a smaller foundation ring David Wright at LMS would be interested in hearing from you - and we would be delighted to share the cost! Scraping in the new big end bearings continues.

Slightly tangential but those interested in industrial steam might like to know that Pen & Sword have just published my book on industrial steam titled "Steam at Work". The book costs £19.99, but is available from the publisher's website for £14.99, is sectioned by builders and contains over 200 images.

Afraid not; the book's images are mainly preserved locomotives at work on heritage lines this century.

    AB 1719 'Lady Nan'

All being well we will be taking advantage of a crane being on site next Monday, 24th July, to remove the boiler and then the frames from the wheels on AB 1719. Many of the parts have been removed, inspected, cleaned and put into store ready for replacement.
