It's actually only 62 miles from Charing Cross to Hastings, but the Schools were used on the Bournemouth line in the 1930s. Water was usually taken at Southampton (79 miles form Waterloo) but the engines would have been expected to run all the way to Bournemouth (108 miles, or 112 if you're talking about Bournemouth West) on a single tenderful of coal.

Some of the turns out to the end of Kent were "rounders" from London coming through the likes of Margate, Ramsgate, Deal,
Dover and Folkstone and back again. There were a plethora of routes but the mileage out round and back would have been
    readily 170 miles.
The Schools diagramed as standard for this were coaled with 6 tons to save taking any fuel at Ramsgate. An exercise which meant
carefully arranging large pieces high up on the tender.

I remember seeing a Schools class with eleven coaches going at a rate of knots through Earlsfield station in south west London with an Lord Nelson tender, unfortunately cant remember the number.

Well, if you've ever been on an S15 (or any other low sided tender) running in reverse in a snowstorm, you'll know why it is a good idea. More importantly, though, a lot of space is required to fit all the necessary electrical gubbins required for running to Whitby and Battersby.
As for capacity, water is more important than coal as Pickering water is not of the best quality so not taken if it can be avoided and to get a 50 mile round trip without taking water is a plus. However, the parachute tank at Grosmont only holds 2000 gallons so you can't actually re-fill the tank only take a splash. One turn requires 120 miles with just two of these splashes available.

Oh yes, tender first on an S15, into a hailstorm is fun, you may have a storm sheet, but you still get very wet and very cold then you bake as you open the firehole to fire, so your cold on your back, hot from the fire,

Now that the Moors has a none British Railways liveried locomotive coming back into service. It's such a pity that most of the LNERCA teak set [7 out of 8 carriages] has been put out of service by vandals. Could be a Whitby-Brighton through service, perchance with both towns having been "twinned"........:Joyful::rolleyes:.

Patience, work has already started on repairing the vandal damage so it shouldn't be too long before most of the teak coaches return to service. Repton is a lovely engine to go with them, as close to a D49 as one could wish for!

I don't know if it has been mentioned in this thread but there was one high sided tender fitted to 932 Blundells, in 1958 it was painted green by mistake when Blundells was in works for attention (it remained Black to the end) so a tender swap was carried out with 30905 which was in for a HG and scheduled to be be repainted green

To do something really different with one of the three Schools one could be modified to make the proposed streamliner which mercifully got no further than a wooden mock up

    Or most of it did!
Personally I have always rather liked the look. In "Locos that never were" Robin Barnes did an impression of the Bulleid 2-8-2 express type which preceded the MN design, and which was to have carried this streamlining. Barnes found it ugly, but I think it looks splendid...

It has disappeared off in the direction of Goathland so seems to have started running-in trips. If nothing is seriously wrong I wouldn't be surprised to see it on trains early next week.

Probably a mistake that they were ever black. The BR livery for express passenger engines was lined green with ordinary passenger and mixed traffic locos being lined black. I assume that whoever made such decisions decided that a 4--4-0 could not be an express passenger loco and all were painted lined black. When the regions were given some autonomy over livery in 1956 the Southern decided they were indeed express locos and a start was made on repainting them but four were withdrawn before the job was completed.
