Drove past this signal earlier in the week and could not resist going back today. Flying Scotsman hauling The Hadrian along the Tyne Valley line - seen here running a few minutes early just east of Haydon Bridge station.

I remember being on the bridge at Cowran several years ago when 46115 stopped and the support crew had to sand the track to get her going again, took a while.
I think David(linesider)was next to me that night

This has come out well. I spent 2 hours earlier this week clearing this spot but in the end decided to do Beltingham as there seemed to be a chance of sun, which then disappeared. The Haydon Bridge spot is a nice shot although wrong side for the sun. I usually clear it twice a year to keep the shot open as it grows over quickly. Only 5 mins from home so easy to do. I've got numerous locos over the years here. It's always a bit hit miss as to weather they work here or are shut off. Lots of character.

Lovely clips and A3 chatter. Pity about the whine from the rear but there you go.

In which case all I can say is thanks, Dave! It's a really striking location on that rise of the hill looking down. The sun was directly behind / over the train yesterday afternoon but cloud rolled over about 20 mins before its arrival. The light as it passed looked dreadful so I was pleasantly surprised that the end result wasn't too bad.

Was it needed at Carlisle for shunting and/or due to the load management of the A3?

The diesel may have been required by the ECML bit of Network Rail who may be getting worried about fire risk. Also why for the first time this season a diesel stayed on the rear of the Scarborough Spa XP to Scarborough last Thurs. AN

What about 22 June? See @RalphW lament on SSE thread.

It's been pretty wet in Yorkshire this week and countryside nothing like as dry as six weeks ago. But there you go, maybe 40145 will make it to Scarborough after all!

There was a particular reason for the diesel remaining attached on last weeks Spa, the operational reason did not transpire so the diesel was not used other than making the shunting at Scarborough easier.

What 'lament', I just posted the fact, please don't read things into my posts that aren't there.
Re the 40, as far as I am aware, the majority of passengers go on a trip that includes steam haulage, how happy do you think they would be if they didn't get what they paid for, just because a few diesel 'enthusiasts' want the maximum mileage that they can get.

No slings and arrows intended Ralph.

Re last week, good to know it was operational contingency rather than weather, hopefully a one off.

Re the Hadrian, three trains used platform 3 at Carlisle in between arrival and departure, so the timings there must have been quite tight last Saturday.
