Point taken but which sewage works is the fuel bought from? It must be really piggy to handle.

    Gentlemen,

I can assure you the picture is not tweaked or fiddled with - there has been no colour saturation.

In fact, I've lifted the shadows & blacks & that's it - also I have not put any contrast in either.

Camera settings are deiberately -1.7 stops (to preserve highlights) shutter speed 1/1000 & ISO 200, colours neutral.

Oh, and I've stuck it on face ache & looked at it on here & there on the mobile & it is fine!

So I respectfully suggest you check the settings on whatever device it is you are using. ;)

Please don't qoute me on it, but I believe it could be from Shotton, others will know for sure - I hope!.......which is not your best steaming coal but more suited to domestic fires......

All I know is, when you chuck fresh coal on, it produces black exhaust - but soon gives way to nice clean white - a few yards after the photo was taken, the exhaust was exactly that.

I like it. It produces heat almost at once when put onto a hot fire and if the right amount is put in the right place doesn't produce much smoke. It does burn through quite quickly but keep on top of it and you'll have a very satisfying run.

There's nothing wrong with either of the computers on which I view NP. Not sure what you mean by lifting shadows and blacks - I'm assuming you mean making them darker - which is tweaking and fiddling in my book, and which effectively increases contrast between dark and light.

In the end yours are the only photos which get regularly posted on NP that appear to have been altered. You like it, fine; personally I think it looks unrealistic. I've seen much worse but not regularly, and I'm not sure I even saw them on NP

    Suit yourself.

You forget your eye's filter out a lot of info so your brain doesn't explode - the camera on the other hand doesn't. ;)

I don't do "as shot" I use all the data in the RAW file - why waste if its there?..... :)

As for "lifting" I lighten the shadows & blacks, which is the complete opposite of what you think I do.

Well fair enough. I'll continue to like what the eye sees. Anything else is by definition unrealistic - or perhaps I should say enhanced. I'm pleased for you that others like it.

I have to agree with you on this, IMO it is not very professional when one has to "enhance" their pictures.

You do realise every picture you've ever seen has been processed, don't you?
Straight out of the camera JPGs are processed to enhance them, it's simply that the enhancement is predetermined by a chap in the camera manufacturer's lab.
    All film is processed...
Please be sure to tell Ansel Adams that 'processing his shots to enhance them isn't professional' when you see him next(sic).

One thing, that siding is on the gradient im not sure if its still on the 1 in 60, but its quite a pull to get momentum, plus a poor railhead, in my time, i had the wheels pick up pulling the freight out that very same siding with the same effect, blacking out half of Medstead the shot must have been just as the engine picked up its feet .

It is quite usual for steam locos to produce black smoke when first moving after they have been stood for a while. Soot accumulates on the tubes and in the chimney from even the lightest of smoke. Once the reg is opened and there is a blast up the chimney this soot is entrained with the exhaust and ejected. It's when it continues to be omitted that there are other causes, such as bad firing.

Ansel Adams was an American photographer, he worked with another photographer, Fred Archer, on the zone system. This system is used to determine the best exposure and contrast settings.

Ansel Adams is acknowledged as one of the most pre eminent photographers of our time.
Anyone with an appreciation of the art of photography would know of him.
So I guess we can conclude the value of your opinion on the matter of things photographic.

My all means say that you personally do not like DD's photographic style, that is absolutely your right, but expressing an uneducated opinion marks you out as, well, uneducated.

(Or a troll - please don't tell me I've been feeding trolls!)

I have no interest in Ansel Adams, or the "art" of photography. Mr Ryder has already agreed that the photograph in question was modified to present and image differing from that which would be seen by a human eye at the time. All fine and dandy - I don't like it, but there you go, and I've never commented before, and I've seen much worse from others - however in this case the fireman of the 9F was criticised on the basis of what appeared to me to be, and is now known to be, an enhanced photograph. If the criticism had not happened I would not have made any comment.

I honestly do not care if Mr Ryder modifies his photos to the extent that they look like woodcuts, but this is a forum on the internet and I am allowed an opinion on them just as you are, and I really do not care what you think of mine.

No I am not a troll , nor am I a photographer as I just take snapshots for my own pleasure. If my opinion singles me out as uneducated then so be it for as you say we are all entitled to an opinion which is that in modern photography and with digital available, there is no need to "enhance" a natural picture for the sake of it.

    My best regards
    Chris

There used to be a saying, the camera never lies, Well as a keen photographer myself, it does , it can be made to lie, graduated filters that can change sky from bright blue to stormy, overlaying images, digital takes these options to a whole new level, not quite as far as making Chris look attractive, only surgery can do that ( only joking chris) :) an image can only capture a moment in time as seen through the lens,
