As far as I know no trains, the signalling wouldn't be working anyhow with track out neither the signals or gates would work as the track circuiting over the crossing would show occupied and holds everything anyhow

Maintenance at Rowsley and riverside as usual (lots of lovely oiling and greasing) and some.more tree cutting I'm sure I've seen foliage seed twice already this year the steelwork for Rowsley cabin is painted up and moved out the shed for space now and rods on with the upright legs.

I noted while having a brew the tank waggons main tank is now repainted and there's.some.big bits of wood to remake the wooden supports up with in the shed, I didn't get to speak with anyone about the work on the gwr loco but thee is a saddle tank being rewelded and on its back in the shed.

Very small update this week as my main job was to go recover some flange lubricators with a colleague of another line, from down in deepest Midlands , a joint recovery effort, now comes the Fettling and bodging excersise of getting some up and running between us From all the bits we got, Hopefully some more update mid week when I get down again

5th / 6th August – 1940’s Weekend



This is a time when Peak Rail takes a journey down memory lane and turns the clock back to the days of ration books, blackouts, make do and mend, holidays at home to show the public an insight into how civilians and troops survived during wartime Britain.

Our Rowsley Station site is transformed into a hive of activity that reflects the conditions of that era. Home Front displays with an original Anderson Shelter.

Late afternoon on both days will see a battle between Allied and German forces, feel the tension and chaos of the battlefield when the Allies and the enemy forces meet using armoured vehicles and explosives.

Live entertainment throughout the day including Paul and Natasha Harper, the Ashby Big Band, together with other guests. Saturday only: Display of Apulacian dancing by “Lahdidah” in the picnic area.

Normal timetable and special fares .

 

Small update this week, managed to do more painting on church lane box and some tree lopping work for signal sighting but the pics this time are off Ben and the LMSCAs hard work on new poster boards ,benches and sign work at Darley Dale.

I've received a query about the start of the extension from Darley Dale to Rowsley South. The share issue 'Northwards to Northwood' was launched on 17th October 1992. The crossing at Church Lane was put in place 3-6 March 1993 and by that stage clearance work at Rowsley was already well underway. Could anyone give me an 'official date' for the start of work to put into the chronology of events?

What's happening to the Station Road Level Crossing?

 

Woodster, the level crossing is in the process of having the up line relaid with new running rails,check rails,chairs and fittings, two new closure rails on the south side have also been fitted, a good turnout over the last few days with around fifteen folks involved in the works,even in the torrential downpours and sunshine of yesterday, the old concrete bed and timbers are in remarkably good condition protected by the Tarmac over the last twenty or so years and we've also fitted some drainage pipes too which weren't there originally, the old rails had wear on them where they met the chairs, the check rail bolts had also worn away under the road and some of the spacing blocks were different sizes and have been replaced with the correct ones.

Contractors removed the old Tarmac on Thursday evening with some of the gang and will relay the Tarmac on Monday, a road management company have dealt with signage and such as that's beyond our jurisdiction outside the crossing gates.

Tommorow is finishing off work,boxing in and removing the old rails and timbers from the signalbox base while the crane is on site.

 

I helped put the crossing in all those years ago! When it was installed we did all the signage - how times have changed

Strange to be doing this on a peak summer weekend rather than in autumn or winter?

We were booked to travel yesterday morning as part of a long weekend break, however arrived at our hotel on Thursday to find out the railway is closed. That was forty fares lost to the line.

 

See http://www.orr.gov.uk/rail/publicat.../improvement-notices/improvement-notices-2017 With a compliance date set for form 27 May to August 31 2017 so it had to be done by August 31 otherwise the railway will be in bigger problems from ORR.

 

Sorry about that but as stated the work had to be done, there's always the item that any venue anywhere in the country could be closed upon arrival, though it would have been nice to accommodate your visit.

Out of curiosity do you mean forty pounds or forty fares? Great difference between the two, the latter being a large party which should have been prior notified of the works?

It is a tour group of forty.
I don't know when the tour company were informed but we received a detailed itinerary from them the previous week, still including Peak Rail, and weren't told otherwise until we arrived. We were given the impression that they had only just found out.
We'll just have to make a visit sometime in the future.

 

Why couldn't single line working be undertaken through Darley Dale Station?

 

Many thanks for the reply, indeed a large tour, il check with the office but word went out to the volunteers involved about three weeks ago,at least the first I heard, so it could be in the chain of things between the railway and the tour company the word didn't get round quick enough, that said it would be nice to see your party in the future, the work to replace the crossing was completed today, albeit the tarmaccing to be completed tommorow by the contractors, Stuart Graves has taken some pictures for the update attached, at some point the down side of the crossing will be renewed but at least now we know what needs doing having seen how the up side works went ahead.

I'm not a civil engineer but is tarmac-ing over sleepered and ballasted track a sensible idea in the long term?

 

I would have thought that concrete sleepers would have been better than timber long term. But I'm not a civil engineer either.

 

I was thinking more along the lines (sorry!) that sleepers on ballast is a resilient road and will move slightly under load.
