Im not 100 per cent sure, but i believe the boilers, are unchanged so should be interchangeable but i dare say Spamcan 81 will know more detail, there may be some detail differences between the two, taped holes for hand rails, etc, possibly dampers, were the unrebuilts fitted with dampers later ? as they went through shops, the whole question of boilers between the rebuilt and original is a worthy discussion on their own, for instance, were boiler swapped between rebuilt and original locos?

Ash pans are a separate component and could be fitted with / without dampers, AFAIK the boilers are unchanged from the original.

Was a new firebox constructed for 34027 as part of the most recent overhaul? SDR I think did a great deal of work under contract.
There will probably be a decent market for Bulleid fireboxes in the years to come.

Pridams used to make all the pressings , didn't SDR took over their business, and moved it to Buckfastleigh? the work done on 34016 was suppossed to result in a boiler with a 29 year life, that it failed so soon, i think after 5 years is cause for concern im not sure who did the work, but i don't think it was Pridhams, they may have supplied the boiler pressings i know it wasnt done in house though ,

One small but crucial difference is the location of the safety valves. On the flat tops they are on the middle ring of the boiler, where as on the rebuilts they are on the crown of the firebox.
It wasn't just a new inner firebox constructed for 34027. The only piece left was the outer crown sheet. The rest is new.

Given that SDR Engineering are mid-way through an order for five complete new inner fireboxes for Light Pacifics, I'd say that there is a decent market already ...

One of them is for 34101. 34028's boiler is also at Buckfastleigh but not sure whether this is having a new 'box.

It will need at least part a new one. I spent most of today sitting next to a corner of it's foundation ring! (which had been cut out for assessment. My uninformed view was that it showed absolutely no signs of wear or tear!

    Are you sure?

    I'd assume 61624 means the 'U' section.

It is a major difference that the Merchant Navy boiler has a solid foundation ring to the firebox and the Light Pacific firebox
a U section of boiler plate. The smaller fireboxes seemed to do reasonably well along the straight sides
but cracking of the fire box corners was a recurrent problem and welding in patches of new plate was a
    standard job.

It is indeed a U-section corner that I was sitting next to, but I would still say it is a section of foundation ring as that's what it forms!

The shape of the U channel makes washing out easier than a flat foundation ring. The U shape allows the washout water to carry mud & scale to the plug holes and blowdown instead of the crap sitting on the foundation ring and the water washing over it

Meant to say this last week, on passing Carnforth they have either had a bit of a shunt around or just it happened that more of the screening carriage stock was away than usual.

The chassis of 34073 is now visible from the mainline adjacent to the workshop building at the south end of the site, whilst where for ages was what appeared to be a Bulleid boiler painted in silver paint is now what appears to be a Bulleid boiler which has obviously (from appearance) recently been extracted from a locomotive.

It might be that from 34016. Was the smokebox attached?
