Hmm, much as I'd love to, my home remains the GWSR, and besides, a 5 year BDS dentistry course is somewhat demanding on time! Nevertheless, some more visits are on the cards, especially with reciprocal travel arrangements for the humble poor student!

Well done mate, you'll have quite a few railways in striking distance, there's plenty of scope for seeing how other lines do it!

Thanks both! Will definitely be doing some exploring, both of heritage railways and the local countryside! I wonder if halls will let me have my dog occasionally....

There is a coincidence. SWMBO and myself will be on the NYMR for a week from Saturday staying in Station House, Grosmont. Not sure who is looking forward to it the most! She will be happy hanging out of the bedroom window watching the movements across the level crossing. Whereas I am looking forward to breakfast in the tea room each morning and a couple of pints in the Crossing Club each evening!

Watched Repton get banked out of Grosmont this morning by 80136 via the webcam. 926 is a lovely looking machine but it does seem to struggle at times - bit prone to getting stuck and having to reverse before it sets off. Never really looked like it was going to shift the train up that hill this morning on a greasy rail.

it's a three cylinder engine. Getting stuck on centres comes with the breed.

Do the slightly uneven crank angles with Gresley's conjugated gear make any appreciable difference to this?

The uneven crank angles are to compensate for the different angle of the inside cylinder. 65% max cut off in reverse is the biggest problem.

I had the pleasure of being on the footplate for that trip. Once the banker dropped off she did quite well. Lost her feet a couple of times and that brought the speed right down but she recovered and kept going. The departure from Goathland was rousing to say the least.

A new and very surprising addition to the line's motive power fleet is due to arrive today: Cockerill steam tram 'Lucie' of 1890.

There is no surer sign of the way the NYMR has changed recently than the fact that an engine such as this has been accepted in spite of being neither big nor black nor - the greatest sin of all - from these parts. Its arrival is a very welcome development indeed.

It is privately owned. The NYMR expects to get use out of it once it is overhauled (mainly the boiler.) A principle use will be for carriage warming, and testing steam heat systems at C & W. Subject to successful trials, it is also hoped to be able to operate Pickering-Levisham shuttles on gala days. These little locos can shift when opened up.

Does it need very much doing to it? I seem to remember that when it was first offered for sale a few years back it was said to be in decent order.

Mechanically it is good. The boiler needs a re-tube plus whatever else is found when it is stripped down. However, it is a relatively small job for Grosmont Boiler Shop, even if it needs substantial work. The new owners are looking at some slight mods, though.
