The OCD/pedant in me says that the group should consider changing its name slightly as well - does it really need the word 'recreation' in it? There aren't any other Ivatt diesel groups so no chance of confusion, and it will also not make sense as and when the loco is completed. The Patriot/A1/P2/G5/F5 projects all just use the class name without the words replica/new-build/recreation.

The Ivatt Diesel Society sounds fine and also takes into account the historical/research side of the society.

Yes was on my list to do. Here is a summary.
    1. A minute silence was held in memory of the society's secretary, Stuart Smith, who passed away the week before.
    2. Additional trustees and other officers were appointed, however, there was only one person will in to be chair and secretary (me) and couldn't be both, so the secretary role remains available. Dave Kew is temporarily in the post, but he has made it clear that he can not do so long-term.
    3. Before any work can be done a safety plan must be made, in regard to work around the class 58, which needs to be stripped.
    4. Before any rebuilding can begin we must decide whether the loco will haul trains on Network Rail or just heritage lines. We will gather comparative costings then have a meeting. Note: running on Network Rail is much more expensive to build toward and the loco would have many additional features not on the original twins.
    5. We discussed the EM2 bogies at Swanwick, which would fit the loco. They are owned by the EM2 Society. There is some difference of opinion about the worthy of these bogies and we hope this might be resolved within 12 months. However an engineer's report would be necessary to assess their condition.

The main thing here is that there seems to be an element of progress. :)

Not really. Just sensible precautions such as a working platform along the body length

There is scope for education displays, both by the loco and for transit to other sites. This is one aspect that can attract grants and result in greater public knowledge and interest in the Twins and our recreation. Volunteers to develop such a project are highly sought.

Yes it was purchased by the society by closed bid, thanks to an outright donation by a member.

If that really is all..... excellent. Actually, I was thinking more 'materials hazardous to health'.

Glad to see the project's alive and kicking, even though I'm not a diesel person..... I blame my tinnitus on 'Whizzos' slamming my eardrums into the middle of my head under the roof at Paddington when I was still knee high to a grasshopper!

Just on that point: my understanding is that the original locos spent considerable time double heading in order to give equivalent capability to a Class 8 pacific. Since the 1940s, the demands are if anything more challenging: quicker acceleration needed, consistent running at higher speed while loads of most charters are still around 10 - 13 bogies.

That suggests to this outsider that unless you are planning on making a pair of them, opportunities to run one on the mainline in remunerative fashion are likely to be quite constrained. (In power and tractive effort, you aren't far removed from a Class 33, and you don't have too many of those these days pulling charter traffic alone on the mainline, do you?) So heritage line running would seem to be a more realistic option. Or have I missed something?

Good point. Did I read that one of the Ivatts is the equivalent of a class 5? If so, it would be unrealistic to expect any more from this 'missing link' than from a solo Black 5. Perhaps the good folks building this one have enough on their hands for the time being!

From memory, they would fall into the "Type 3" bracket, so equivalent to a class 33 or 37 of the current mainline registered types. These do get use on the mainline solo (I think WCRC have used them in Dorset), but would be constrained on load.

Personally, and from the comfort of my armchair, I'd be disappointed to see mainline ruled out from the start, even if preserved line operation were to be the mainstay. I appreciate that my views are of similar value to my (zero) contributions.

Yes I'd also love to see it on the main line, but I don't want to see it thrashed.. Oh wait.. Yes I want to hear it thrashed for a short while, but not for hours on end, as would be the case to keep network rail clear for other traffic

The pair of Derby Diesels were trialled agains Ivatt's 'Duchesses' 46256 / 7 (all 4 locos were part of the same build "contract") with Ivatt expecting the pair of diesels to be the equivalent of a 'Duchess' and a single loco to be the equivalent of a Stanier 5MT 4-6-0. The single loco proved the case and during winter was operated on express goods from Willesden but when trialled on passenger services (to Liverpool and Blackpool) a single loco found to nearer to a 'Jubilee' in performance. The pair of diesels proved the equivalent of a 'Duchess' and by 1959 were a common sight working Euston - Glasgow services throughout.

Had the Derby Duo being operating when TOPS was under development I believe they would have been classified Class 34; I have a note that Class 34 was allotted to BR Class D16/1 - the pre-TOPS classification of 10000 / 1
