Got to be SVR, purely for the variety of matching coaching stock, only thing missing is something in green, but the blood and custard or maroon mk1 rake should work with anything ex southern in BR colours.

Will the GCR be linked by 2020? It could be called "The impossible dream gala" have what ever new builds are around, plus the Duke if ready and 6023.

..... even though it's technically a conversion..... you know.....like all those GW projects aren't...... ;)

Edit: I think I came across a bit mean spirited there..... Actually, I'm greatly looking forward to seeing them all. It'd be nice to see the F5 and a few others currently in the early stages joining the ranks of the 'nearly there' as well.

Hadnt someone tell SVR special ops div that in 2020, they may be inundated with new builds and they had better start planning something :)

[From the Manual of Unhelpful Unwanted Inappropriate and Irrelevant Suggestions, Chapter 42]
They'd be able to clear a bit of space (and ensure the low loaders got better utilised into the bargain) letting a few of theirs go on holiday 'for the duration'.

    ...or not.

    It's a Frankenmonster.
A total ruination of a GNR Boiler thought this stuff was an absolute no no?
What a waste of time money and effort.
You really now need to build from new the right kind of boiler. for it to be worthwhile, rather than talking about the next loco.

You've clearly not done your research. Not a frankenmonster at all. The engineering and attention to detail that's gone into Beachy Head is astonishing. Some of the best of the heritage movement in fact. I've studied it close up.

Why is it always the uninformed who are the most dismissive and nasty about things they don't understand?

    Totally unnecessary.

We already had 251 in preservation anyway and the use of this boiler has merely helped to speed up the build process. The rest of the locomotive is all new and LBSCR through and through.

The Frankeinmonster jibe was i think a touch of sour grapes, over a project that was doomed to failure, as it as just a 27 hibred,
Ask your selves this question, was the availability of a suitable boiler the final bit in the puzzle to rebuild a Marsh Atlantic ? with out it would the project have been viable when it was first mooted?

To paraphrase Mr S. Baldrick ....." irony, a bit like brassy".

People who have gone to the lengths required to skillfully produce anything on the scale of 'Beachy Head' or 1014, 2999, 4709 & 6880 on the steam side, or the 'Baby Deltic' on the diesel side, are the beating heart of the heritage movement.

These are projects which, even when not what any one of us might have chosen personally, deserve a hell of lot better than ill considered rants from random keyboard warriors.

Anyone finding a particular project offensive is under no obligation to turn up for the launch, without needing to worry that their absence will detract one iota from the celebrations marking the culmination of years of graft researching, fundraising, promoting, designing, procuring, machining, rivetting, welding, fitting, assembling and painting.

Everyone is, of course, perfectly entitled to their own opinions. This one just happens to be mine.

Must admit I was a tad peeved at the last surviving LNER O6 being broken up instead of another no-hoper such as 8173 (which, ironically, is receiving 8518's barrel to replace its own scrap one), but since others of the same design survive everywhere from Bo'ness to Baghdad... and, while I don't know a whole lot about the County, is it not the case that the new 1014 will be rather different internally, and operating on only 225psi vs the original's 280, thus cutting power by 20%? That seems a bit of a shame, if so. However, as I understand it, the LBSCR H2 is the same damn thing as a GNR C1 anyway, just with slightly larger cylinders and slightly reduced diameter wheels all round... WIBN(!) if 424, 251 and even 990 could all be brought together in working order for an Atlantics Gala? Maybe have 488 and Thundersley in steam too, to represent those Atlantics that carried their own fuel and water instead of towing it...

Which begs the question... aside from singles, are there any once-common wheel arrangements of which not one example remains operational?

Blimey, I go away for a weekend and ...

Anyway: The loco is being built. Those who don't like it - no-one is forcing you to contribute financially, nor to read this thread. Is it necessary to spend quite so much time telling those who have built the loco that they are wrong?

Leader and sleeve valves: that topic has been done to death on the forum before. Suffice to say, our next project won't be one of those. Nor will you hear anything about using the new Atlantic as a sleeve valve test bed, at least not outside the confines of the beginning of April...

As for a next project: There is a lot of planning to be done on any project, that has low financial impact, but is necessary to assess financial and technical viability of any project. The time to do that is towards the end of the build of the existing project, i.e. now.

In the last four months or so, I've fired (and in some cases driven) nine different steam locomotives, ranging from 20 tons of 1874 Fletcher Jennings 0-4-0T to "Flying Scotsman". I think I have probably had interested questions from "normals" (or "passengers", as I prefer to call them) about all of them: people are genuinely interested, and the variety is part of what makes it enjoyable. So I'm looking forward to firing Beachy Head, and hope that I will still be on the footplate when the next one comes along, whether that is Craven, Billinton or something else.

Finally, a reminder of what it is all about: pre-preservation, "Beachy Head" arriving at, appropriately, Horsted Keynes.

Great photo, and a superb loco which I will be travelling down to the Bluebell to see once its running. Will look good in BR black, Southern green and LBSC umber brown. Also, appropriate rolling stock on the railway for all three, from LBSC pre group, Maunsell and Bulleid coaches and Mark 1s, both SR green and Blood/Custard. Love it, and all the other new build locos, the effort and ingenuity which has been put in to them is fantastic and must be applauded.

I don't know, trawling through this thread is making Beachy Head (not the locomotive) sound appealing....

Good grief, considering what has been left as 'relevant', what the hell nonsense had to be removed? ;)
