Have drawn a blank so far...
Might have to broaden the search. Does anyone know whether the plandampf rake of green Mark 2s might be surplus?
Many thanks everyone, I have enjoyed every reply.

I think he means the Anglia Mk2 set Tornado used over the S&C this year.

Reduced formation = reduced brake force.

Where could they run at over 100mph on Scotrail, though?

I think you need to be a little bit more forthcoming. I know someone who has acquired at least one mk3 but I'm not putting vagueness his way.

Reduced fuel consumption and reduced wear too.

It's what they think will provide the necessary capacity at an appropriate cost, taking into account infrastructure constraints - platform lengths at termini, Queen St in particular, are an obvious issue as are the depots they'll be maintained at. The carriages also need modifying with retention toilets and replacement sliding doors.

That said they already have a plan to increase capacity during the franchise by adding vehicles to some sets, which can presumably be brought forward if need be.

As for 100mph, that's perfectly sufficient for the routes they are operating.

  10. A problem for a lot of Scotsmen.

The vast majority will be EMUs, Class 319s recently withdrawn from Thameslink services and all those London Underground D78s purchased by Vivarail. With the amount of rolling stock going off lease in the next few years extra siding space will be in great demand...

The east coast main line, EDI-ABZ for one...

Above average size, just one of the many fortuitous advantages bestowed upon the Scots.

So I finally contacted Scotrail, and the problem is indeed platform lengths. These machines are going to be stopping at many wee stations, and NR seem to be in little hurry to extend Insch as one example close to home!

As for the remaining coaches, Scotrail are not getting them. They are holding 2 MK3s as spare, but unfortunately they did not tell me where the rest are going.

    Very interesting.....
If train lengths are shortened, hopefully it may be the FOs that get the chop...if it is the exGWR sets, sounds like another call to Porterbrook could be in order.

Do you mean ABD - I can't find ABZ?

But where are the >100mph stretches on that line. No don't know it well, but don't recall obvious higher speed sections from my trips there.

Many thanks for the varied and interesting replies.
Could anyone help confirm whether asbestos was used in the construction of Mark3a&b stock?

HST vehicles are TFs not FOs. They are a completely different vehicle. No MAs - direct 3 phase electric. No buffers, alliance couplers rather than drop head buckeyes, etc, etc.

ABZ is the IATA code for Aberdeen Airport. Perhaps he's going to fly them in. :)
