Perhaps said end user should be supplied with an instruction booklet in 19 different languages - or a diagrammatic version similar to those supplied by IKEA

I'm sure this sounds hilarious to you. But how would you like the instructions not to include your language?
Boiler are dangerous things. They have killed plenty of people. Making sure users have instructions they can understand is wise and proportionate. I've worked on a projects I where we installed them (not locomotive boilers) and, since they weren't British manufactured, I'm glad the instructions were translated into English.

Well, when I bought my current house, it came with a central heating boiler and no instructions. I think it may have taken me as much as 30 seconds to work out how to use it.

There are some other bits of PED silliness as well, none of them are major, but cumulatively they waste a surprising amount of my time on writing documents which exactly no one will ever read (unless it blows up, when I'll get crucified for having made some typo or other).

Anyway, to return to topic, anyone found out what the original kerfuffle was over yet?

the PED is a marketing directive, basically aimed at products put on the general market which might be sold to anyone, be it business or public. It is not aimed at one off, bespoke bits of kit produced for one client. However, because of the way it is written, it becomes all embracing. It does not however apply to anything that you make for yourself as that is not putting it on the market. So, if I build a boiler for myself it doesn't have to comply with the Pedal but if estwdjhn built exactly the same boiler for me, it would. Both would be covered by the PSSR, though.

As I wasn't involved I can't give the full SP, but going by memory of what was reported, the boilerwork had been carried out, and the mechanical/running gear work took much longer than expected, so much so that when the time came to erect the boiler onto the frames the seven year had expired, despite the boiler never having been steamed. This led to the tubes having to be cut out and replaced with a new set following full inspection. I must say that I'm surprised that no-one involved at the time has posted about it.
