Very sad news. A real credit to our movement - and both locomotives are still doing what they were built to do thanks to him.

I have two of David's signed pictures in my home: an evocative study of the motion of a Bulleid Pacific and the Andrew Barclay that I used to partly own.

I don't know how he did it but his paintings of steam locomotives had the technical accuracy that the purists will usually expect but they also captured the brush and the mood of the artist as distinct from a photographer of steam. The short lived life of preservation at Longmoor was totally a David Shepherd idea until locals put a stop to his railway plans.

A sad, sad loss to wild life conservation and steam preservation.

RIP David. He always seemed to be one of the gentlemen of preservation. His Railway legacy will always survive with 92203 and 75029 as well as the ESR and other locos he helped save.

Very sad news. My parents are big fans of his work and have several signed pictures by David. They were even invited to his house to pick one of them up from the man himself. I now also have some of his work; pencil drawings of the final days of SR steam at Guildford and Nine Elms.
I had the pleasure of meeting David several times at Cranmore when visiting the ESR. Always a gentleman and a pleasure to chat to.
Also went to an excellent chat show with him in Guildford some years ago when he talked about his wild life conservation work with great passion. Such a lovely man. A sad loss.
    RIP David.

Very sad for steam, art and wildlife. I'm sure I heard somewhere that he took his income from the sale of prints and when he sold a painting the proceeds went to the WWF. Perhaps it's fitting to add a picture of the two steam locos he will be remembered for seen here on there way to Longmoor passing Elstree

I was standing very close to where this photo was taken in 2008 at Toddington GWSR. David Shepherd was leaning out of 92203's cab. I don't think I have to say any more.

Was lucky enough to have met him at the GC quite a few years ago when 92203 visited, despite being mobbed when he left the footplate he was happy to speak to everyone and sign autographs etc. A very charming gentleman. Thank you for everything David.

Sad loss, a very talented man. His legacy will live on in the form of 92203, 75029, his paintings and the work he did in the conservation of wildlife in Africa.

I was there lucky enough to be there on that day. The bbmf were another of davids passions, back then if we wanted a fly past David picked up the phone and rang the squadron leader.

I spent part of my BTP career at Southampton Station and in the summer of 1974 or '75 (IIRC) I was sent to Basingstoke to cover the departure of Clan Line (I think) on a special. I was there earlier than I needed to be and found the loco simmering away in a siding. David Shepherd was chatting to the crew on the footplate and on seeing me in uniform, invited me up for a brew. The memory is somewhat faded now, but I was left with an impression that he was a very nice and genuine man. The only downside was that (in those days) I couldn't carry a camera with me. So if anyone has a pic from that day with a stocky young Constable in it....pm me! lol

RIP David...we owe you a lot.

I was there as well, and I have a photo very similar to the one @Kinghambranch posted above. I understand that David arranged for a group from BBMF to have a drive and fire day at the GWSR using 92203.

As has already been posted, he was one of life's gentlemen. He always had time for anyone who wanted a chat. We'll all miss him. Condolences to his family at this sad time.
