Discussions in another thread set me wondering which loco had the sad distinction of being the latest surviving not to make preservation and when it was scrapped?
My awareness reached 1981 and Austerity HE3830/55 ('Hurricane') at NCB Walkden workshops. Any later ones?

Do you count fireless engines? In which case there certainly have been more recent industrial ones cut up in the UK at the end of their service life.
Anyone know the exact date that Hawthorn Leslie "Shakespeare" bit the dust after it finished at Bersham colliery, that was early 80s I think

'Shakespeare' 1980 rings true and I vaguely recollect it was cut in error? Perhaps our ex Steamport correspondents can advise given Bersham's other loco 'Hornet' went there?

The scrap merchant tried to contact a certain loco-owning Steamport member to offer him the loco for £500 , but unfortunately he was away on holiday & by the time he got back it had been scrapped.

Thanks Bob, I thought there was a sorry tale attached to its demise. Had 'Hornet' already been secured at that point or did the holiday end before its cutting?

From memory, he only found out about it after it had been scrapped.

Locomotives have been scrapped that were 'preserved'. I know that the remains of 'Coronation', a 15" Hunslet IIRC, were scrapped at Embsay in the early 80s having been stripped for spares for sister loco 'Airdale' and Avonside 0-6-0ST 1945/1926 was cut up at Elsecar in 2012.

I seem to recall there was an Avonside cut up, or at least major concerns it would be, sometme within the last ten years.
And I think it was in a dismantled state somewhere in the North of England.

I think you're thinking of Avonside B4 0-6-0ST works no 1945 of 1926 which was scrapped at the Elsecar Railway in 2012

Was it the Barclay in the scrapyard near Bradford? ("Harry", I think).

I believe it was extracated and survives bu not sure where.
So far there is no report of a loco being scrapped from industrial ownership after Feb '81? Was there anything in Scotland perhaps?

I think I'm right in saying that Barclay 0-4-0F 'Glaxo' was the the last.

I think it's a bit hard to say. Harry, mentioned above, had previously been preserved but was then sold to the scrap dealer for further use. Castle Donington Power Station kept two locos in working order and these are often claimed to be the last but for a very long time they were only steamed on open days, not for real work. BNFL at Sellafield kept a pet loco too. I think there were a few other places where locos were kept in reserve and the last date of actual use may be unknown. A loco at Falmouth Docks was overhauled in the 1980s and returned to service, but soon after sold into preservation- maybe that was the motivation for overhauling it rather than an industrial need.

Did any NCB locos work after the miners’ strike? I recall the Steam Railway article making the claim for Harry being the last industrial- with the caveat that a few other industrials remained serviceable but out of use at that time, including IIRC Swiftsure at Cadley Hill.

There were actually 2 locos in Jose K Holt & Gordon's scrapyard at Chequerbent. One, partly covered in scrap for many years was an Avonside 0-6-0ST "Robert", whilst the Austerity "Harry" was 'on display'. I believe both are at Bryn Engineering.
