Point of order Gentlemen (as our female membership will long since have tired of the scent of testosterone pervading too much of this thread drift). The foregoing issues are scarcely unique to preservationists, but descriptive of rather a lot of us blokes generally. If you're partenered, and don't think it applies to you.... ask your other half!

    Please gentlemen.... Handbags down

Thanks for nice comments, Gav, and I wish the Group the very best of luck with 45551's boiler: as you know, I'm a supporter, but the old energies are taken up a bit too much with 82045 to do more at present. Re further 82XXX tanks, the reason this hasn't been done is that (a) we're mostly too old and (b) a lot of people are waiting to see how 82045 performs in service. Several other lines have already expressed interest in hiring the loco, so we'll see if anyone wants to pick up the baton once it's been given the chance to show what it can do.

I don't think finding funding support would be too problematic if it's gone about in the right way, and it needs to be borne in mind that building further examples of the class would be a good deal easier (and cheaper) than starting a new type from scratch, however attractive that might be - and that's a subject you and I have discussed in the past. Our intentions are best summed up by Paul Bennett's slogan "Practical Steam For The 21st Century": wish I'd thought of that one, and I'm supposed to be the Publicity Officer! Have you seen p.113 of the latest issue of SR?

I have indeed! Maybe the magazine saw how much conversation it created here and thought it would be a good subject to discuss!!! Haha. But of course we won't go on about that again filling up this excellent thread, I am one of the guilty parties who was part of that as I am rather opinionated.... Not that anyone would ever have guessed!! I do enjoy debating but never the name calling!

You do have a point about that economics of already having the patterns etc..... But I'm afraid I would still prefer to see a Fowler 2-6-4t than 82046/47/48/49 haha. And if/when a Fowler tank is completed I would prefer to see another type of loco yet again! That must be the secret spotter in me wishing to tick being behind a certain class off.... But hey if I'm willing to put my hand in my pocket and pay for it what does it matter.

Good luck with the continuation of 82045, I seriously wish you all the best in the project. You certainly deserve it with the effort your entire team puts in. And when 82045 is completed and you have a bit more free time, maybe 4/5551 will be completed at a very similar time, we can discuss more with another drink!

You know, I agree with you in my heart of hearts, but I don't want to go off thread: Fowler Class 4 tank, Fowler Class 3 tank*, 2P...not to mention Sir William A.Stanier, FRS and large-boilered Claughton no. 6004. I'd better go and take my medication, I suppose...

I've got a lovely true story about one of these: apparently, 71000 failed at Tring on an Up express one night in the late 50's: the firehole doors had stuck closed and no one could shift them so they had to send an assisting loco from Watford mpd. The only one available was 40001, and it took Duke of Gloucester and thirteen coaches into Euston. Must have been quite a sight! Unfortunately it was in the small hours and so no one was around to take a pic.

Back to reality now...I look forward to that drink.

Very fortunate, I always understand the 3P prairie tanks were very short winded and disappointing, in either Fowler or Stanier incarnations.

A weekend free to think about a Fowler tank! A chance would be a fine thing! Im afraid that I'm doing our sales stand from pretty much now till the start of December at different events, then it will be the busy time and work and then back to the galas and model shows come January! While I absolutely adore the tank and will fight my hardest to get it done in a reasonable time scale using all the learnings from 5551, obviously none of us can take our eye off the ball in the first project and look to the next, everyone knows our intentions and I'm hoping that it will be well supported once officially launched but as of yet we haven't had any real offers from any "new blood" wanting to investigate who wouldn't be involved with 5551. I suppose it's a case of finish one project before starting another!!

I like this project so much I bought a 2018 calendar (skinflint!) and I do recommend it. Maybe one day I could buy 82046 (brief financial fantasy there, please forgive).
