Sorry to hear that...but I'm sure they'll find the cause and get her sorted for the future. 46115 had some teething troubles, but look how she ended up! Bit of a bonus for the passengers having 'Galatea' at York...steam both ways at least :)

Just heard from a WCRC representative that the big end has gone, so a visit to the wheeldrop is possibly in order.

I think 34051 is at Shildon. Sad news the middle big end has gone and hopefully the loco will be back out again soon.

They used to turn off at Nine Elms and up over the LSW mainline to join the SE line near Stewart's Lane but there is one hell of a climb up and over the flyover with a sharp curve at the top and I sure any steam would need assistance to get up there so may not be practicable. Much easier to work out of Victoria

That's really sad and a massive disappointment for the many who will have doubtless worked hard on the rebuilding and fettling. It's lucky that the return will also be with steam.

So we have a locomotive that undergoes extensive tests prior to being declared fit for its inaugural revenue earning run and it then fails on a fairly significant component. Hard to know what to say about that so I won't except to comment that it looked good on the road.

WCRC must have been confident as they let BIL out without a tail gunner. All credit and respect to them.

This is a scrapyard recovery and the commitment and effort are to be applauded. In her early days there will be some issues. There were with Scots Guardsman and look how that turned out.

No doubt the experts will be able to tell the team at Carnforth exactly what they are doing wrong.

Easy. Put the motion in an oil bath and be done with it. Sure someone has come up with that idea before. :)

For the benefit of those like me without much mechanical knowledge of steam locomotives, can anyone say what that mass of steam escaping around the righthand front end might indicate? Thanks.

Quite so Ralph and I doubt they will have wielded a spanner in anger in their lives. The only certainty of steam loco operation is the uncertainty. Today's failure is indeed unfortunate but she's not the first nor will she be the last loco to suffer failure on the road.

Bulleid Pacifics were not unknown to be less than steam tight at the front. Something to do with outside admission valves IIRC. Could also be a gland packing of course.

I was about to come to that,
There is clearly a problem in that area, and its been evident since its first test runs, so fettling has not solved it when working hard ie full regulator i suspect there is a bad joint in the main steam circuit to that cylinder or its the valve glans leaking by when the engine is seen coasting its not so prevalent, so either a flange joint , or gasket , and it still sounds like the valves are off, compare the valve events to Clan line, clearly BIL' is not quite on song, That she seems to have this leak constantly would indicate its a poor face to face joint, one that under static test you way think you have sorted, but the moment you give it full regulator it blows . and you can only find out if its fixed by running it, i am of course assuming that the defects are not being put down as non urgent, ie its not effecting the performance etc, so we will do it later, those of us who know steam know you can have some defects that are ok, as long as you keep an eye on them, ie they dont get worse but i have to say, when you put together known problems, and now an failure on arrival, you have to question Was BIL in a ready state to run this tour ?
