Good footage i liked the final shot, that could almost have been on the SW main line with a inter regional express , did anyone notice that when coasting, or running with steam only just open, the leak wasnt present, that does look like the glands not sealing properly were the valve shafts machined down to remove pitting and the replacement guides maybe slightly to large?

Interesting day, interesting thread. Easy to understand why WCRC choose not to communicate with us enthusiasts on a regular basis......

Perhaps not your average run-of-the-mill usual railtour, but the Belmond British Pullman outing from Victoria to Bristol on Wednesday 6th September did indeed produce the distinction of "two-different-locomotives-on-two-different-legs" - Tornado out and Clan Line back. I believe that there was a certain underlying positioning-move logic to this (relating to the Torbay Express roster), but nevertheless it happened.

Otherwise, the nearest you get to this nowadays is probably the use of iconic heritage diesels on one leg of an outing to complement the use of steam on the other. Here I'm thinking of, say, the use of D1015 Western Champion on the outward leg of Vintage Train's Z48 commemorative in May 2014, or Deltic D9009 Alycidon on the outward leg of July 2012's Elizabethan, with Tornado on the return. It nearly happened with the Cornishman in May this year, when again D1015 was due to haul the return of Tornado's outward leg to Penzance, but I believe that in the end the Western was unavailable and passengers were instead treated to an unleavened Class 66 experience.

All of which I think helps to underline rather than diminish the very fair point that you make here.

    Sad news about 35018 today.
I am not sure that the NRM is the best place to leave it though. The last MN that went there was only half the loco it used to be after it arrived!

All this vicarious indignation is unhelpful and tedious so why not just leave it to to the relevant parties to reply if they so wish?

Someone will no doubt do a As it arrived shot of 35018, and an as it left with 35029 photoshopped in its place NRM have completed repairs to British india line,
Given the NRM's need for space, what engine do you think they would offer to West coast to take with them, when 35018 leaves :)

Getting back to the actual tour, the important bit where people who paid money, the jubilee was not hanging back , it arrived back at Carnforth a whole 11 minutes early, so the passengers had a good day, two engines on one tour, and no delays even with its problems, 35018 kept its timings, and improved on them hopefully in time she will settle down to be a reliable performer

    Hook, line and sinker ........
The point being if there is comment, it is not aimed at you or most of the others who ramp things up instead of just ignoring it. Never really sure why what is said is such a concern of yours. If you didn't respond it would fizzle out - but you realise that, I'm sure.

Many of the recent posts on this thread would have been better made on the 35018 British India Line thread, as they are specifically about the loco and not about the train that it hauled today. But I'm not sure whether it's worth the bother of moving them. Also quite a few of them would have been better not posted at all: don't feed the trolls.

It's OK to knock WCRC (and anyone else) when they deserve it.

It's even better to be able to praise WCRC (and anyone else) when they have achieved something.

All this "talking to the right people" drivel is inappropriate. I mean, what do the owners of Clan Line (fine loco and sound people) know about taking a MN from a scrapyard???

From a customer perspective, when they booked it, they would have had no idea that the first leg would have been BILs first passenger outing. What a brilliant bonus. Green with envy!

It wasn't a contingency plan, it was intended to doublehead back so it was just fortunate. One question I have is if it was the big end running hot I'm sure MNs are fitted with stink bombs to warn the crew that things are running a bit warm so how was it that no action appears to have been taken as it seems to have not lost any time on the final part of the run. It's not a criticism Of anyone just a question.

All very true. Can I be clear that I am bitterly disappointed for the Carnforth team that today has not been a perfect outing for BIL. Why would you not be when this is a much needed Class 8 back on the main line after 53 years and a Merchant Navy to boot? And yes, I do hope that the problem, whatever it is, is able to be sorted out once and for all.

If today has helped to pinpoint exactly what needs to be done then so much the better and the fact that a below par loco was able to keep thirteen coaches to schedule augurs well for the future. Test runs on the main line with passengers is a rather risky business though. That said, near the end of Southern steam in 1967 there were Bulleid Pacifics struggling around with issues not dissimilar to today although I suspect that West Coast had not intended to commemorate the 50th anniversary in such an authentic way!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery BIL.

My contribution between Settle Jnc and Long Preston, the shot leaving Hellifield isn't worth posting unless you like shrouds of steam!! P4040783.JPG

Unusually for this easily graded bit of line the steam sanders seem to be on?

Rail head conditions at this time of year can be changeable if it is sanders on, then generally they are on for a reason

Don't think it was the sanders, no expert but there's a BIG steam leak somewhere underneath behind the right hand cylinder for my money. P4040784.JPG
